Suri's Going To Catholic School
So much for my comment about how Suri Cruise has been spared the torture of sitting in a ten hour-long Catholic mass. If The Los Angeles Times is telling the truth, then that whole rumor about how Katie Holmes and Tommy Girl have both agreed to keep religion away from Suri until she gets older is made of lies. Because according to The L.A. Times, Suri will become a Catholic school girl this September when she starts her first day of school at the all-girls Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. That's the same school Caroline Kennedy, Wonky McValtrex and Lady CaCa went to.
UsWeekly says that tuition is $38,000 a year and Suri will have to go to mass every single Thursday.
Why does Suri have to go to school anyway? Suri already knows how to stomp in heels down a hallway and that's the only valuable lesson you learn at school. Suri already knows everything there is to know about life. Although, sitting in Catholic mass for hours upon days upon weeks upon months upon years upon centuries did force me to learn a very important skill: how to sleep with my eyes open. Make that two very important skills, because I also learned how to roll my eyes on the inside. So there's that.
And you know that by the end of September, Suri will rule that school Regina George-style.

All true about attending Catholic school.
It also taught me how to sleep with my eyes open during mass or catechism class and I also became very good at inside eye rolls.
But if tortures are to be compared I´d still choose the Catholic one over the Scientonut craziness !!

From what I've heard from friends, Catholic school today is just like a regular private school, with mass. They told me that the church can't get away with all the oppression and shit cause of all the scandals they have (and continue to) endured. And let's face it; that $38,000 a year school is in Manhattan. The super rich folks there aren't sending their kids there so that they'll become super Catholics.

Damn! I was proven WRONG AGAIN! I said that Katie wouldnt' put Suri in Catholic School because of Tom and Scientology. Ooops!
But she did it anyway! You go, Katie!!! Keep giving the big FU to Scientology!!!
I said I couldn't wait to see Suri in her First Communion "bride of Christ" dress and we'll see it sooner than we thought...

It's so funny how people are commenting about the evil Catholic Church and its power over people, but so many on here are former Catholics. Obviously, the Church doesn't prevent you from leaving any time you choose.

In the early 70s in sixth grade, we were taught sex education by a nun in Catholic school. It was just part of biology and no big deal. Most of the teachers were not nuns, though.
Well, I don't support ANY organized religion.
When I became an adult and could think on my own, I realized that I'm not the type of person who can just take other people's word about some mystical creature/god that MAY live in the sky. I have to see it for myself to believe. And so far, I haven't.

My opinion had no conditions, but because it is an opinion, which everyone has, stated about religion as a comment on blog, it's about as useless as two cents, whether it's mine or someone else's. That's all. People are open to criticize it if they want.
As for your disagreeing, I see your point. However, growing up in a strict religion, I saw the harm that stressing "living right" put on families, and the hypocrisy exhibited by many members of the church. Those who try to be "good" solely because of religion and fear of displeasing their god are usually the ones who end up "bad" when no one is looking. I saw how young girls got knocked up because their parents didn't talk to them about sex because it was bad. I saw that ignorance you speak of before my eyes, and I got out of that.
For me, it's hard to distinguish a good from bad religion. I pretty much think following the lead of some random religious leaders - in the end, it really is random - is pretty scary to me, especially when so many choose to follow blindly. Fred Phelps, anyone? (an extreme example, but an example of sheeple nonetheless)
If you are a Catholic, you are supposed to name your children after a Saint.
Thus, Suri cannot be a Catholic name.
You know, i really don't like when parents push you into a religion, my parents weren't like that, they didn't pushed us into a religion and my siblings and i turned out... Normal, haha. I do believe in letting your kids choose what religion they want to have, that's what my parents did, my brother is a catholic, my sister is a christian and i am agnostic, i think is better for your kids to let them believe on what they want to believe, i think that if you do it that way then they won't turned out so traumatized like children with very religious parents end up...

In all my years as a Catholic, I took communion maybe a dozen times, and confessed maybe 4 times, and that was only because I was going to part of a Quinceañera and a wedding. And when I confessed the last time, I lied! Bwahahahaha!

Catholic School? Out of the frying pan and into the fire. They invented indoctrination.
"That's the same school Wonky McValtrex and Lady CaCa went to."... they don't put that in the brochure, right?... none of that is really a selling point for any type of facility, i would figure.

I went to Catholic school and really the Sisters of Mercy had carte blanche when it came to discipline. We had to hide the pointer to keep them from smacking us with it.
Having gone to Catholic School myself, I would say that is a notch above Sea Isle Scientology ( or whatever the brain washing academy is ), but not by much. Still, it has to be better than being turned into a Scientology maniac. Really amazed how quick this divorce worked out.

I think that if she does end up going to catholic school, it's telling a LOT about the kind of dirt Katie had on Tom. Either that, or she really isn't Tom's child.
I just can't see Tom being so lax and ok with Suri going to any other kind of 'religious ' school without putting up a huge fight. It just doesn't make sense.

Last night, I watched two programs on Scientology. The one I linked here is focused on how Tom Cruise got involved in it. It had clips of him when he was really young and Suri looks just like him. Tom was seriously considering becoming a priest so he has strong ties to Catholic church as well.

Katie must have a LOT of dirt on Tom for this to happen. However, from what I've seen of the CO$, they have other means and methods for retaliation. I don't think it'll be smooth sailing for Miss Holmes.

I'd agree with you Mojo, if it was any other church/religion/belief Tom wanted. Almost any religious school gives you a very good education, but, from what I understand the co$ doesn't let the kids go to school, they just put them in work camps, to keep them unable to do anything else but devote their lives to the church.

I understand your point and I think in the case of Scientology it's everything before if and when you meet your maker most question. The whole radical teachings and doctrines are more what people have an issue with especially when it comes to kids. Being forcefully interrogated (audited) or being worked as child labour for 15 hour days, being forcefully separated from you family, being sent to basically jail to be re-educated when you're deemed rebellious and question your authorities are the things that we as a normal society have and rightfully so a problem with.

================
Actually, Catholic schools (*any* good schools, in fact) are massively over subscribed. They can pick and choose.
I don't know what it's like in the US, but my parents went to church explicitly to get at least some of us into the private religious schools. (There were other reasons, but that was a big one.)
______________________________________________
You're right, in that they cherry pick their students, but not on the basis of how good a catholic you are. The NJ catholic schools require a standardized test to get in. Some of the c-schools are better than others and require a certain percentile. Most of the c-schoolers I knew went there solely for the sports teams.

"My two useless cents". It's a common way that people deflect criticism of their statements by hedging their point. I have no argument with you, but if that is your opinion, please say so with out putting conditions on it.
I actually disagree- "MOST" religions stress good behavior over bad, so regardless of your belief system it benefits us all to have a segment of people who believe in good actions for positive consequences.
We have another segment who prefers to ignore the bad religions who promote ignorance, yet blame the good for their beliefs.

I went through Catholic school in the 90s and early 00s. They don't try to make lefties be right-handed anymore (I'm a lefty, and three of my Catholic mother's siblings are lefty and I've never heard any stories of them being made to learn to write with their right hand). Also, non-Catholics were certainly allowed to attend our schools. I believe they paid a slightly higher tuition, though.

They do not attempt to change handedness to right anymore, but they also do not charge a higher tuition for non-Catholics. Take this from someone who is a non-Catholic who has paid for Catholic school.

I was in Catholic School for 12 years during the 60's and 70's. Some of those elementary school nuns should never have been around kids. We were told to "walk on the silver line" in the hall while keeping our index finger over our lips so that the devil wouldn't tempt us to talk. The left hand was the "hand of the devil" (Mano sinistro) spelling? Latin/Italian for the "sinister hand." I saw natural lefties forced to write with their right hand-- this was when good handwriting counted-- those kids never had a chance for a decent handwriting grade. I don't think that Catholic School is as bad now, but we were a lot more respectful of authority... Those nuns scared the crap out of us

Yeah, I've heard many stories like this. And my husband went through some of that. Both my aunt and uncle were forced to become right-handed (it's "Mano sinistra", you wrote it almost perfectly, unfortunately it's just that italian has to put a gender even on attributes :))

Silvio Berlusconi, just die already.
My sons will go to private school, eldest has been enrolled and starts late next month.. I chose private school, not for the religion but b/c public schools focus so much on the state standardized tests that a real education is overlooked. I'm sure due to logistics and local real estate, a lot of public schools house creme de la creme students, but that doesn't mean the education there is the same as a private school. And I don't know about this school La Holmes has chosen, but often times "religion" is a one hour a week class; that's how it is at the schools around here anyhow. A lot of private schools sell the education, not the religion. Of course, there are private schools that teach creationism; those are the ones we chose not to enroll our children in.

fwiw, it's been my experience that catholic masses are really not all that bad, compared to other religious services. My entire extended family is super-Catholics and so I have to sit through at least 5 masses every year. Usually they're short and to the point.
Protestants, on the other hand (like my parents), drag the sermon out approaching the 45-minute mark, and STILL manage to fit in a bunch of hymns and long-ass prayers in there before the danged thing is over. I once went to this Baptist service that was almost 2 hours long in the middle of the summer, with no a/c! never again.

My cousin fakes being a Catholic so her children could go to Catholic schools in New Jersey. They're the best education someone could get in the area so my cousin thought "why not?". At get-togethers, we ask the kids to recite Catholic stuff they learn at the school and we laugh. Even the kids know that they're just fake Catholic. They sure get a good education though.
