QOTD: Morgan Freeman Doesn't Think Obama Is America's First Black President
Here we go again....
Morgan Freeman was a guest on NPR'S Tell Me More show the other day to promote one of his new movies and somehow the conversation moved into the topic of Obama and how the Republican Party had it out for Obama from the beginning. Morgan thinks that one of the problems is that we keep calling Obama the first black president when he's really America's first mixed-race president. Obama has said before that he identifies himself as an African-American dude. (Side note: I'm mixed and whenever somebody asks me which side I identify with most, I tell them the side that gets me the best presents for my birthday. It's the only logical way of looking at it.) Here's how Morgan Freeman broke it down for us:
"First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him ... they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America. There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president — he's America's first mixed-race president."
He is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, 'We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he's only going to serve one term.' That means they will not cooperate with him on anything. So to say he's ineffective is a misappropriation of the facts."
And it was just last year when Morgan Freeman called Obama a black man while talking to Piers Morgan about the Tea Party crazies:
"Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What’s, what does that, what underlines that? 'Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.'"
WHICH IS IT, MORGAN FREEMAN? Stop allegedly boning your step granddaughter and clarify this shit. This nation needs to know whether or not Morgan Freeman thinks Obama is a black man or a mixed-race man. WE NEED TO KNOW. No, we don't, but we do need Morgan to answer Harvey Levin's calls about Katie Holmes and Tommy Girl. The only tea I want MF to spill is TomKat tea.

Im pretty sure it was for the same reason people rape other people today, to feel powerful in emasculating another. If you study psychology, you'll know that humans learn to lie, deceive and be self centered from almost birth and the only thing that makes us moral individuals is the realization that others are just like us and feel the same things we do. When you tell someone that a person's race makes them unequal to you, you have no qualms about hurting them. People are easily misguided like that, it's why most early rural Americans slept with their sisters and cousins, they mistakenly believed keeping genetic material close to home made you superior. Early slaves owners werent psychological geniuses and farmers aren't all pig fuckers, slave owners raped simply because they could, they could be evil to something with no reprimandations. Ergo we have mixed African Americans today and Inbred White Americans today.

Morgan is correct. President Obama is mixed-raced and he should be proud of that. Obama's mother is just as white as EVERY other President before him. He's half-black, and half-white. Only in America do we make people chose one side of their mixed heritage, and that's wrong! It's a societal ill.

No....there's a difference. When the Democrats voiced objections to Bush/Regan....they had valid arguments, objectiveless war, depression era economy/ineffective, unevenly leveled war on drugs, etc.

Disappointed in MK for once.. How is Morgan wrong about this? It's true, Obama isn't the first black president, and people need to admit that shit. He's just as much black as white, and it's fucked up to hear people ignore that. It's true he's considered useless because he was absolutely blocked by the Republicans who decided that they'd rather this country crash and burn than to have it considered rescued by a black man. But at the end of it all, every word Morgan said is try and not offensive. Bringing in the step-granddaughter comment is wrong and obscures his point.

America and it's one drop rule has always been dangerous, but the fact that no one cares about it in this day and age just makes me really fucking sad.
You cannot have it both ways. If Halle says that her daughter, who is 3/4s white is black, and that she believes in the one drop rule, people start spouting off platitudes about how race doesn't matter, but it does. America fucking sucks, because so many people are prejudiced racially and will not admit it.
People will remember that Heidi Klum's daughter Leni is Italian and German, and she can say that proudly and have people repeat it. However, everyone will say she has 3 black siblings, not 3 German-English ones.

From everything that I have observed,read, and heard about your country; I can say with conviction that regardless of the colour of his mother, your president grew up being reminded that he was black. Just look at some of the comments on hear that infer that he got into Harvard based on affirmative action. The man graduated second in his class at Harvard.

I agree with Morgan also. Obama is African-American (dad = Kenyan, mom = American). I'm Black (okay, maybe more like "toast" but you get the point). And my daughter is bi-racial. Most people assume she's white but nobody, NOBODY would call her Black based on her skin tone, eyes and hair. So why Obama who is also bi-racial is considered Black is beyond me.

It's not false. Obama just refers to him as "the black sheep of the family". There is a good biography about Obama's mom it came out about two years ago. Truth is SHE was the black sheep in her conservative family. Kind of a free soul, married a black man and a foreigner. Obama wasn't that close to her as she didn't provide much stability for him. Maybe that is why he kind of chose to distance himself from that side of the family and not be of mixed race.
It's not false. Obama doesn't deny it. There are pictures of Obama's mom with Dick at family gatherings when they are little.
It's ok with me, it's just a little weird is all. It's like we only elect billionaires and people from certain families in this country. Bush has ties to the monarchy in England, Clinton goes to Oxford. They spin it as " I was raised in humble beginnings by my grandmother" shit, but they're all linked somehow.
Umm...I didn't read all of the comments, but I just wanted to bring up the subtle fact that Morgan Freeman wasn't ever actually calling Obama black. He was quoting the "other side's" blind ambition to completely shut down all of our president's efforts toward making change, while also exploiting the Republicans' inexplicable need to point out that he is black every other freaking day.

I think the bigger question here is why is race even an issue in 2012? I didn't even know Obama was mixed and I don't care. I don't see people for the color of their skin or bullshit like that. I care way more about whether they say "sprinkles" or "jimmies".

At what point do we objectively consider someone to be of a particular race, when they are 3/4 something?, 7/8ths? Are his daughters black?
If President Obama has said he identifies himself as a black man, then he's black. He could have said "I identify myself as someone of mixed race" and he didn't.
Race is made up anyway. It's all relative to current social constructs and what are socially considered to be unique traits and behaviors. For example, look at the genesis of the US census, race is a constantly changing section based on evolving social norms.
Here here for a decent college education, or self education... Whatever.. I'll take some intelligence where I can get it! :)
