QOTD: Morgan Freeman Doesn't Think Obama Is America's First Black President
Here we go again....
Morgan Freeman was a guest on NPR'S Tell Me More show the other day to promote one of his new movies and somehow the conversation moved into the topic of Obama and how the Republican Party had it out for Obama from the beginning. Morgan thinks that one of the problems is that we keep calling Obama the first black president when he's really America's first mixed-race president. Obama has said before that he identifies himself as an African-American dude. (Side note: I'm mixed and whenever somebody asks me which side I identify with most, I tell them the side that gets me the best presents for my birthday. It's the only logical way of looking at it.) Here's how Morgan Freeman broke it down for us:
"First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him ... they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America. There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president — he's America's first mixed-race president."
He is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, 'We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he's only going to serve one term.' That means they will not cooperate with him on anything. So to say he's ineffective is a misappropriation of the facts."
And it was just last year when Morgan Freeman called Obama a black man while talking to Piers Morgan about the Tea Party crazies:
"Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What’s, what does that, what underlines that? 'Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.'"
WHICH IS IT, MORGAN FREEMAN? Stop allegedly boning your step granddaughter and clarify this shit. This nation needs to know whether or not Morgan Freeman thinks Obama is a black man or a mixed-race man. WE NEED TO KNOW. No, we don't, but we do need Morgan to answer Harvey Levin's calls about Katie Holmes and Tommy Girl. The only tea I want MF to spill is TomKat tea.

Hotmami, I had the same problem with the lopsided scores. I can't do math for shit, but I can write pretty well.

It's PHELPS time!
Obama is biracial. He can claim black all he wants it still won't change the fact that a white woman gave birth to him. Morgan Freeman is correct and people should start calling him as such. He called him black before because that's what Obama thinks of himself as. Only because when he came to the States that's how he was treated, he started hanging around pro black rights group types, etc. He wrote about this openly in his book and it's obvious to see. All of that despite the fact that he was raised by his white grandparents...oh and yes he obviously himself wanted to be known as "the first black president". Another reason he claims only black(and married Michelle to complete the "black family appearance)-he used to date only white women). Don't ask me how all the way back when he married Michelle he knew he'd be president one day, that's a discussion for another day.
Um. He got into college because he's intelligent, Karen Flatts. There's no conspiracy there. I mean, it's pretty evident that he's an extremely bright man. Do you think he's faking it somehow?
Why is that idea so difficult to accept?
I find that very peculiar...
Also peculiar to deny that Bill is quite intelligent. Not smart enough to keep it in his pants, but extremely bright, nonetheless!
"The unemployment numbers are even rigged! Housing market numbers, rigged! "
Nah. Why am I seeing so many people getting hired, then? Why have I been offered so many jobs I don't know which one to choose? And that's in four short months. I don't think they need to "rig" anything. It's evident the economy has turned around, if only slightly. I remember when things were *really* bad and you'd go out somewhere...a store...a restaurant...and there would be NO ONE there. Consumer confidence has risen...people are going out...buying things...they wouldn't feel "confident" if they weren't working.
And yes, you did state it as though it were a fact and not your opinion.

I think it's funny that if someone opposes Obama people jump on that person like they are the enemy. Facts are facts. Do I like Romney? Nope. Do I like Obama? Nope. The lesser of the two evils is who I will vote for.
"He's by far the worst;"
In your opinion. Although I don't recall him LYING about WMDs in order to start a war. Pretty sure that would qualify someone as the "worst". In my opinion.
If some little shits demanded my SAT scores, I'm gonna be stubborn and not give it to them cause I don't like being told what to do. That and because they were heinous.
Oooh, a political thread on the D? MK I love your hit ho ass.

@Karen,
Its well known the he graduated magna cum laude and was the president of the Harvard law review, a position which is only given to the creme de la creme at Harvard and includes such honorees as 7 supreme court justices, four secretaries of state and countless generals and department of defense heads, etc.
You mean to tell me, knowing all this, you still have suspicions about his transcripts? Just like many had suspicion about his birth certificate because *gasp* his father was Kenyan, even though presidential candidates are vetted years before they ever have a chance of running for office?
When a president uses his constitutional right to not release his transcripts and gives a valid reason for doing so and yet is still met with hate, unbridled hate unlike any president before him has seen, you gotta wonder what's going on?

The free fall started back to the 1920's regardless of those who can't stand Bush to the point that he is to blame for everything. A basic economics class will tell you that. He hasn't saved shit!
Morgan's right. I've always seen Obama as the first mixed race president.
I'm guessing Obama identifies with being black as opposed to white because that's the way people view him. People judge by appearances. Look at Cameron Diaz. People see her as a white woman even though she's mixed.

It doesn't let barely literate, unqualified minorities attend top universities, only those at the top of their class who have been denied that opportunity because of institutionalized racism.
****
Unfortunately the man in question disproves your typical moronic bleeding-heart liberal assertion.
How was BHO ever denied anything because of institutionalized racism?
His father attended Harvard, his mother had a PHD.
His bank VP Grandmother sent him to the best private High School in Hawaii, were he was not at the top of his class.
He attended grade School in Indonesia. Was American institutionalized racism denying him opportunity there on the other side of the world?
The Republicans since Reagan are enriching the top rich 1 % wealth by double, and screwing the middle class. Romney will continue that trend. He voted for the same healthcare in Massachusetts that was passed by the Supreme Court. He used to be a resonable moderate. The new Republican crowd is rigid, and not willing to compromise. Obama is half white, but many African Americans have white blood in their background. Morgan Freeman looks like he has some other mix in him ( I think I read he had Native American ). I will vote for Obama. Romney's Super Pac won't even disclose their donors. They are probably all the 1 %, with some rich Indians (India ), Asians, and Arab Sheiks in there as well. Oh yeah, Rupert Murdoch is a big donor for the Republicans.

I lived through the fuckery that was Carter, when my parents couldn't put food on the table for us with four jobs between them, we almost lost our house and inflation was scary as fuck (coming to this generation soon) which means that I have seen more presidents than most here. I pay attention to all things political, not just what's on Facebook or Youtube. I have schooling in politics, not armchair politics.
I know exactly what I said. He's by far the worst; and so, when a few years have past so the youngun' see what has been put into place, they will be sitting there saying, "oh shit, how'd that happen?".
well of course Morgan's right - both schizy statements reflect the bullshit that is the white, Christian right, middle America gun-toters and Southerners still pissed that the slaves were freed.
that said, Morgan is an old man possibly boffing his grand-daughter, so I listen to him and figure whatever shit he spews is a side effect from all the damn Viagra he must gulp down to keep that young ho happily humped.

So, yes, technically Obama is half-white. Do you think that stops racists from caring? No. So it is of great historical import that he is half-black. In a racist culture, he might as well be 100% black.
**************************************************
Yet he has made it clear from day ONE that he identifies as BLACK. How is shunning one half of your identity (not to mention the racial profile of the parent who raised you and didn't disavow you and other half/step/who-in-the-hell-knows other children) NOT racist?
He has divided this country more than it ever was before, when he had an opportunity to unite it. He is a shameful bigot, and one worse than the KKK or the Black Panthers ever strived to be, because he hides under a cloak of tolerance, while stirring the pot of racial INtolerance.

I don't like conspiracy theories but when someone literally spends MILLIONS of dollars hiding their past (school records, not the BC) in the legal system, you at the LEAST have to give a side-eye to that.
Evilshoe...I don't think you're racist, just seriously short-sighted if you think he's the worst President ever. Have you forgotten Bush!? That man was a DISASTER. The entire world *hated* us b/c of his foreign policy and just flat out dumb-assery (I know that's not a word. I guess it is, now)!
"I will probably vote for Romney. But not because I don't like Obama in any way, just because I am much more concerned about fiscal conservativeness than ANYTHING else."
If you're not rich, you're not going to benefit from any of his policies. Just keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that the man has Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts where he's stashed ill-gotten gains and that he also STILL has not released his taxes! Even if I were GOP, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
Hotmami...AGREED! He didn't NOT win due to his VP pick being a woman. It's because his VP pick was an idiot!

I don't give a shit if he's black, mixed, purple or rainbow colors. He sucks, period. Worst president ever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is he perfect, no. Worst ever?
He saved America from a free fall economy when even top economist weren't sure what to do to get us out of this mess, do we have a Clinton era economy, no....but things are much better than they were in 07. He's gained the respect of the international community in which the former president an his administration were so disliked and not respected, people were throwing shoes at him and in which the former VP has an order or arrest for war crimes should he ever step foot in a country that's part of the European Union; I don't think Obama is a wanted man in any country. He's made unprecedented strides in giving equal rights to gay Americans with the repeal of don't ask don't tell and has set us down the path toward universal healthcare, a luxury which every single other westernized country enjoys except us. Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland enjoy some of the highest employment, higher education and lower crime rates in the world and they have universal healthcare....while we have some of the lowest, #26 on the college educated list, and we don't. He has made strides toward bi partisanship for the good of the country which have been proudly hindered by the Republican party simply because he's Democrat. So when you say the worst ever, I have to politely disagree....we can and have seen worse...
I haven't read all the comments, but this is addressed to people who say Obama isn't black, and shouldn't identify as such, and should not be considered America's first black president:
I'm mixed — Asian and white. And I look Asian. From the moment I was called a racist slur, assumed to be good at math and the violin, a bad driver, submissive, etc. (you get the drift), I was treated as an Asian (i.e. foreign) person. So even though I know more about pop culture than most white people (or people who look white) ever will, and have lived in the South, the East, the West Coast, and feel American through and through, I am reminded every day people see me as "Asian," whatever that means to them. So I identify as Asian.
So, yes, technically Obama is half-white. Do you think that stops racists from caring? No. So it is of great historical import that he is half-black. In a racist culture, he might as well have a black mother and a black father. Plus, we all have such mixes in our backgrounds; some people's are just more obvious than others.
The question I have for Morgan is: what is your freaking point? That it doesn't count that a man who is visibly a person of color is the president? I don't get it.
I think what Morgan is saying is very true. He isn't totally black. As a matter of fact, he is not only half white, the white is Anglo. Not Italian (white), not Greek (white), not German (white), not Arab (white). But Anglo, the predominately, majority American White. So he is without a doubt 50% white cracker trough and trough.
With that said, I think he is also correct in saying the Republican party is on an absolute rampage to get him the hell out of office because he is "considered" a black man. But I think it goes deeper than that. I don't think the Republicans or their supporters are consciously trying to be racists. I think they just don't want a black liberal. A black liberal stirs up stereotypes of "the angry black man" that scares people. There is a huge stereotype that black people are welfare mongers and trashy hip hoppers and that fuels these feelings. That is not necessarily the way I think, but I know those thoughts are out there.
That brings us to what defines racism. A traditional view is that racism is the belief that a race is inherently inferior and not as intelligent or capable of the same life and accomplishments as another race. I don't believe very many people in the US still think that way towards blacks. It would be crazy to. Everyone, or almost everyone, knows that is not true. The racism we see today is more geared toward stereotypes. I don't like you...because...this is how is see your culture. And that is the problem Obama is having. And it is clear, although no one will dare admit it.
I will probably vote for Romney. But not because I don't like Obama in any way, just because I am much more concerned about fiscal conservativeness than ANYTHING else.
Society sees Obama as less than a white man but above a black man so Morgan Freeman is right in that respect. Obama beat McCain the first time because he chose a woman as his running mate and any man is considered above a female in this hierarchy that society created. Unfortunately it's the way shit works and until you recognize it, nothing will ever change. The privileged rich white male doesn't give a fuck about anyone that can't add something to their pocket so get with program and stop shooting yourself and the rest of in the foot. That one's for you Poopele and that greasy slimeball animal abusing mormon douche fucking twat in your avatar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's funny how American Indian, Asian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, etc., use of affirmative action is never viewed as a negative in Repubican rhetoric...only African American. I wonder why? When a qualified Asian person enters an institution because of affirmative action, nothing gets said, but when an equally qualified black person does the same thing, somehow it's viewed as unfair. Widespread discrimination and outright racism prevented many qualified African Americans and other minorities from ever receiving a college education thus the reason for Affirmative Action. It doesn't let barely literate, unqualified minorities attend top universities, only those at the top of their class who have been denied that opportunity because of institutionalized racism.
