QOTD: Morgan Freeman Doesn't Think Obama Is America's First Black President

Here we go again....

Morgan Freeman was a guest on NPR'S Tell Me More show the other day to promote one of his new movies and somehow the conversation moved into the topic of Obama and how the Republican Party had it out for Obama from the beginning. Morgan thinks that one of the problems is that we keep calling Obama the first black president when he's really America's first mixed-race president. Obama has said before that he identifies himself as an African-American dude. (Side note: I'm mixed and whenever somebody asks me which side I identify with most, I tell them the side that gets me the best presents for my birthday. It's the only logical way of looking at it.) Here's how Morgan Freeman broke it down for us:

"First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him ... they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America. There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president — he's America's first mixed-race president."

He is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, 'We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he's only going to serve one term.' That means they will not cooperate with him on anything. So to say he's ineffective is a misappropriation of the facts."

And it was just last year when Morgan Freeman called Obama a black man while talking to Piers Morgan about the Tea Party crazies:

"Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What’s, what does that, what underlines that? 'Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.'"

WHICH IS IT, MORGAN FREEMAN? Stop allegedly boning your step granddaughter and clarify this shit. This nation needs to know whether or not Morgan Freeman thinks Obama is a black man or a mixed-race man. WE NEED TO KNOW. No, we don't, but we do need Morgan to answer Harvey Levin's calls about Katie Holmes and Tommy Girl. The only tea I want MF to spill is TomKat tea.

Dog, thanks for that post. People like Romney, and his wife, don't understand how the "common" folk live, and they really couldn't care less.

Funny, when Kerry was running, Dems weren't saying shit about him not being from the "common folk", and he made THREE TIMES what Romney makes.

EvilShoe, I didn't know that.

With respect to windmills here, I liked the idea of wind farms until I saw many thousands and thousands of birds are killed by them.
---

Doggy, if that's how you feel about it, then you may want to check out "Windfall". I've only seen the trailer.

Here's a synopsis:

Filmmaker Laura Israel follows the installation of wind turbines as sources of energy in two rural towns in New York State, and discovers there are downsides to the source of energy generally thought to be a clean, green and sustainable alternative to the dirtier resources of oil and coal.

In Meredith, New York, residents welcome the proposal made by wind power developers to build 40 industrial wind turbines in their town, believing that the project will inject a flow of income into their failing economy, and that they are helping to free the nation from our dependency on foreign oil supplies. But, when they further investigate the project and realize that the 400-foot high windmills will transform their bucolic landscape, dwarf their town and create unanticipated noise pollution, some citizens begin to oppose the project. Opposition strengthens when they discover that most of the huge profit from the project will go to outside developers rather than to their town. As the time to decide on whether to approve the project or not approaches, the community of people who once got along peacefully becomes a battleground of opposing ideas and interests.

Meanwhile, in the town of Tug Hill, New York, where 195 wind turbines have already been erected, Israel follows residents who are experiencing unanticipated and severely adverse effects from the tall towers, including non-stop strobe-like light and shadow patterns and the disturbing low frequency "whomping" sounds caused by the constant rotation of the turbine blades. Their quality of life and, in some cases, their health has suffered considerably, and the value of their property has plummeted.

Hey Dog,

We perpetuate the hegemony because the standard of living we are afforded here in America is not free. It at times requires the subjugation of other nations. There's a reason why the "richest" continent, Africa, is the "poorest". We consume with inpugnity. It's bullshit. If we weren't so greedy and gluttonous, maybe our footprint on the world wouldn't be so huge, and it wouldn't require financing trillion dollar wars on credit cards to maintain.

;)

Dog's picture

You know something? It isn't our job to police the damn world. It isn't, but somehow along the way not only did we decide it is, but other countries decided to let us handle THEIR problems. And now, we've been so busy policing the world, as you call it, our own country is on the brink of fracturing irreparably and all Washington does is snipe at each other. Where does it say we get to march into other countries and force democracy on cultures that have been the way they are for millennia? It doesn't mean their way is right for us, but who are we to tell them how to run their own countries? I'm not saying our interference (or intercession) hasn't helped in a lot of ways a lot of times, but when we fuck up we do it better than anyone. Can someone tell me we did good in Vietnam or that we're doing good in Iraq? Is ousting Saddam and killing Bin Laden worth the over 3000 American lives lost? At the end of the day, once we pull out of there for good, how long do you think their new "democratic" government will hold up?

If the United States is going to remain able to help other nations that actually call on us for help, we need to turn inward and fix ourselves or we won't be able to help anyone else. I am sick to death of both parties shouting and pointing fingers and digging up dirt and outright lying. Get off your damn asses, make a plan and WORK TOGETHER to save this great nation of ours, for hell's sake! We are falling apart and all you assholes do is whine and act worse than any toddler!

access to health care is one of the building blocks of a prosperous, progressive nature. for many years, the system has denied access to all of the advances available to us as Americans to only a select few. surely, you are aware of people getting debilitating diseases and being bankrupted by said disease, and then unable to purchase additional health insurance if, say, they recover but are dropped by their original insurer.

health care reform changes that.

people are scared of it because they don't understand it, and human nature tends to want to destroy that which they don't understand. it's ok. you will find out soon enough how necessary this is and how much better off society as a whole will be.

and how good a president we have who finally, FINALLY makes a dent in our abyssmal DOMESTIC problems instead of bankrupting us trying to be hegemonious world police.

"Problem: people can't afford health insurance.

If people actually can't afford it, they won't have to buy it.
If they CAN afford it, they do have to buy it...but even the "penalty" is cheaper than what people are paying for premiums right now!
People can't afford health insurance b/c no-one is regulating the health insurance agencies and also because you are paying for people to go to the ER for a cold.
I know the GOP is (oddly) against regulations (unless it means regulating marriage or my body), but in this case it seems like a good idea! At least to me it does.

They charge 350 for a tour of the ND oil fields!
Unbelievable.

But in closinmg since I have 2.5 work hours left...

Problem: people can't afford health insurance.
Solution: .Make pewople buy health insurance and put a fancy lable on it 'tax'.

We totally missed the boat on windmills back in the day. Mostly because the yuppies couldn't stand to see them on the land. Did you guys know that eBay runs their buildings on windmill power? Maybe not all of them, but they're a pretty green company.

Maybe if back in the day, when the warnings about oil supply were first put up, our government had listened, we wouldn't have to be raping the land and leaving it not fit for roaches. We didn't learn that lesson and we're not learning the one about global warming and this one here is going to make the oil lesson look like a mother's kiss once we hit the tipping point. And from all of the very extensive reading I'm done, depending on who you believe, we're there now. Once we tip, this planet is done.

Those "precious sandhills" are important for of our ecology; what's the point of cheaper oil if the earth is completely polluted. Look at the bigger picture rather than instant gratification.

Wrong.
If this is the case, why do Republican "leaders" keep getting caught making racist remarks (see: "Santorum almost says the n word in a speech" amongst other examples) and sending out racist emails (see: politician sends out "joke" photo w. a watermelon patch in front of the White House). What about all those lovely tea party folks holding up signs w. Obama w. a bone through his nose? And the equally disgusting thinly-veiled racist sign w. Obama in whiteface? (oh, sorry, as The Joker. Yeah, right). What about the HUGE deal they've been making over his place of birth. I mean, shit, he's Black so OBVIOUSLY he must be a Muslim and African, right? Anything to get the xenophobes in a tizzy.
Perhaps that's not why you dislike him.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
However, you are living in a dream if you think "he's an awful politician" is why the rest don't. They have been giving him shit since day one! Mitch McConnell declared they would do nothing but make sure he was a one-term President. Why do you suppose this is? He hadn't even started out yet!
If Pres. Obama is such an "awful" President, then WHY in the world would they put forth Romney, whose state was 47th (!) in economic health when he left his governorship?! Pres. Obama is "awful" yet they chose someone with a proven track-record of not only true awfulness, but sleaze (offshore accounts?), to boot?? That doesn't make sense.

As for the healthcare bill, only part of it has been implemented so far. Most won't even take effect until 2014, so unless you are psychic you have no idea whether or not it is a failure.
Grasping at straws.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Thanks, Cappy. I just wish I could be this way when I'm speaking to someone. I don't get all freaked out but I'm much better with the printed word than I am with the spoken. I don't debate well and am one of those people who think of something totally awesome to say - after the conversation has ended. :-(

One day I'd like to show my conservative friend her emails from these days and ask her what she thinks of the person who wrote them. Not to embarrass or hurt her, but to let her see, once everything has gone by, how blinded she is by her hatred.

She once saw a picture of Obama entering a mosque after he took off his shoes. He and a bunch of dignitaries was there as invited guests, not to worship. But she pointed to it as "proof" he is Muslim. I said to her how ridiculous that was and if our Senior Pastor was invited to a mosque, he would also take his shoes off because that's a sign of respect, like we ask people to take off their hats in church. She said he wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near a mosque. So before Bible Study one night I asked him to his face if he would visit a mosque and he said he'd jump at the chance because there is always something to be learned from people. My friend, for once, had nothing to say when he put that out there.

-----------

The free-thinking society doesn't include Fox News viewers.

Dog,

Hear you. In all seriousness, it is unhealthy and a very real problem. Damn true.

It's not really about a difference of opinion or leadership-style, but HOW we're picking "opinions and leaders". I say to people all the time, "take a day, half a day, whatever, and just look up both sides of the story". Out of 10 ppl you talk with, maybe one will do that.

What I love about DListed is that none of us know one another from a hole in the ground mostly. Yet, when you least expect it, most of us are really reading each others' shit and processing it. A mostly mature point-counter-point occurs and that's a beautiful thing. I wish ppl could do more of that face to face. It's like we "agree" with someone if they "seem" agreeable in person. Blogs take that aspect away; we're forced to read/process. Blogs forces us to question our own words.

Thank you. Exactly. And what's happening is what I'm experiencing in every day life which is people find it too hard or time consuming to actually read, research, balance the facts on the ground and think of solutions. They rather "just act against" in emotion for the sake of "acting". And when we ask the valid question of "What in particular has X person done or spoken of as viable options over Y person?" they got nothing. No one is saying X is greater/lesser than Y, but back it the fk up with a plausible solution.
