If you look only at the book, there is no way you would despise Wendy. And Jack Torrance's descent into madness is slower, and he is not funny like Jack N. (but I love Jack N.!!)

Mike: you reminded me that I want to see "Three Women" again. Before I wiki'd it, I misremembered and thought it was Shelley, Sandy Dennis and Sissy Spacek and was going to comment that it was a trifecta of irritating. But Sandy Dennis isn't in that one. And now I feel Old because no one probably knows who they are anymore.
It's awesome! The one woman's paintings are so wonderfully disturbing.
Speaking of Sandy Dennis (and Altman), I've heard "Come Back to the Five-and-Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" is finally going to get a DVD release late this year or early next. Remember that one?

Maybe I should read the novel, because I think Kubrick's "The Shining" was scary as fuck. And I think we were supposed to dislike Wendy. (I like Kubrick but absolutely DESPISE his version of "Lolita". )

God, I'm glad you said that - I am a HUGE King fan, saw this film when I was 15 (I'm ancient), I love Jack, but the movie was absolute garbage. Duvall was fucking annoying, Jack was over the top wayyyyy too early in the film, I wanted to kill the kid myself, using an ax instead of a mallet (???), Scatman was the only good thing. I must say the scene where Duvall finds the same sentence typed over and over 500 times was genuinely creepy.

Yeah, that scene was pretty good.
Crothers WAS good but IMO it would have been much more effective if they had kept to the book and he lived so they could play the scene on the snowmobile where the Overlook's spirit nearly gets him to kill Danny and Wendy after he rescues them.
But I have to say the very end where the 1920s (I guess) music played and you see Jack's face in the black and white picture was creepy.

Birthday love to Shelley Duvall for the Faerie Tales, and the scenes in "Time Bandits" - first she's tied to a tree with her hapless medieval lover while they are being robbed in Sherwood Forest, then reincarnated as the fiancee of a deceitful loser on the Titanic (both played by Michael Palin). She's a great comedienne.

I have never sat through a complete showing of "The Shining", and I love early Stephen King. From all your comments, I realize the problem. This Shelley Duvall was so damn annoying that the film was nowhere near as scary as the book, plus I couldn't take more than 5 minutes of her on the screen.

Jorja Fox has a permanently downturned mouth and permanent frown. Couple that with her awful complexion and alligator-looking lips? Oogly.
I must be one of the only people besides King himself who frigging LOATHED The Shining movie version. It has none of the slow build-up of WTF to terror that the book did, the hedge maze was ridiculous, Duvall was a joke, and that stupid kid's "talking finger" was laughable. The book was just phenomenal.

Doc Severinson is still alive? I loved him on the old Tonight Show. Fantastic musician. I loved the nights when Ed McMahon was gone and Doc co-hosted, with Tommy Newsome leading the band. The show was so much funnier without McMahon.

Yep, my appetite is still lacking a bit, but otherwise I'm back to baseline.
Ringo Star....one of the most underrated drummers in the game, people would say he was just along for the ride but actually he was a true talent. At the end of Helter Skelter it was Ringo that shouted out the famous line "I GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS" before whipping his sticks across the room after a particularly rough recording session, most people attribute the line to John....and there you have it, the REST of the story. As agirl says peace and love...something we should all get back to :)
