So Long, Andy Griffith

That sound you hear is the sound of unwrapped Werther's Originals rolling across the linoleum floor after every memaw and pepaw dropped their favorite candy to cover their mouths in sadness at the news that the star of the only shows they watch has gone up to the great big Mayberry in the sky. Just a day before the Fourth of July, America has lost one of its national treasures. Andy Griffith's good friend Bill Friday tells WITN that Ben Matlock and Sheriff Andy Taylor passed away this morning in North Carolina. Andy was 86.

Bill Friday says that Andy died early this morning at his home in Dare County. Most know Andy from Matlock and The Andy Griffith Show, but he was also in Waitress and Pray for the Wildcats. While reading about Andy on Wikipedia, I learned that was never nominated for an Emmy for Matlock or The AG Show. I know, pick up those Werther's and drop them again.

Rest in peace, Andy Griffith. Grampa Simpson will never be the same again.

lol, I'm sure ol' Andy heavily influenced federal legislation. Just like Charles Schwab, everyone stopped to listen.

RIP Andy Griffith.

I'm glad the old commie is dead. His support of Obama's healthcare shit that was rammed up our asses was the last straw.

Besides, I hate people who whistle

I really liked him! An ex-boyfriend of mine loved Matlock. And this is when we were in our 20s. That Andy Griffith. He certainly had appeal.

Puppy Love's picture

I always liked and admired Andy Griffith because the man could flat-out act (as others have noted, see "A Face in the Crowd"); he gamely played the straight man on TAGS to Don Knotts, even though the show was supposed to revolve around him; he was multi-talented (comedian, actor, all-around entertainer); and he never came flat-out and said the actress who played Aunt Bea was a cunt (which by all accounts, she was).

He implied it but never said it. LOL.

RIP, Sheriff Taylor.

RIP Andy! I think Aunt Bea only let her hair down for sexy times!

From nc, but not a fan of the show .... However, dlisters, if you can check out"a face in the crowd " electrifying performance ... Guy goes from drunken slob to folk hero, reminds me of certain pill popping am radio talk show host... Shows the gullibility of the public and stupid celebrity worship ... Old movie but it rings true today ... A film that I have never forgot ....light years ahead of it's time and still totally relevant today !!!!!!

You don't have to be an oldster to appreciate Andy Griffith. His show was a terrific character study. He was a sheriff that rarely carried a gun. It's still watchable. Righteous dude. RIP

It wasn't that long ago I watched all of the Andy Griffith shows on Netflix. That show was awesome, such an American classic. Sucks, why do good ppl have to die.

He represented an America that no longer exists. Andy seemed like a nice enough feller and I don't really recall any controversy surrounding him personally. 86 is a good long life though so RIP AndYYY

Now what will happen to Otis when he goes on a drunk? Andy always let him sleep it off in the cell. Just as an aside, I've named all my dogs after characters from the show. They don't make names like that anymore - Opie, Barney, Aunt Bee, Floyd,Clara, Thelma Lou, Emmett, Juanita, Gomer, Goober,Jud,Howie,Briscoe,Cyrus,Flora,Orville,Elmo,Farley, and who could forget Ernest T Bass. This is just a few of the names. I guess I got a lot more names for my dogs, but I never called one Andy. He was the warden in the nuthouse on that show.

Sad to see another tv icon go, even if he was a horrible man to work with. I guess the good ones always are "difficult".

I met him once. He was a curmudgeon. One of those "You kids get the hell outta my yard!!" type, and didn't like to be asked for autographs, or pictures with fans.

I've read similar stories. Wouldn't sign autographs, take pictures.... Supposedly bitter about his failed movie career and being type cast as a hillbilly sheriff.

I love that he lived back in North Carolina. I didn't know that.

He lived in the community of Manteo, just in from the Outer Banks. He was a big property owner, and within the past few years had donated large pieces of land to conservation efforts.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I came to this site fully prepared to be so pissed at all the snarkiness from the Dlisters over this story. I <3 snarkiness more than anyone, but not about my beloved Sheriff Taylor. So imagine my surprise (and a few tears, those darn onions I'm chopping) to read not snarkiness, but full appreciate for this man and his legend. Thanks dlisters for not making me have to burn this place to the ground with my defense of Andy! -Signed, faithful reader, born and raised in the big town of Raleigh NC.

Hi crazyinjapan,

Half-Vietnamese in Rogers, AR! in the 70s! I'm afraid I am scarred for life from that experience. Loved the natural beauty of the place, and some people were nice, but it was my first and most extreme experience of racism.

I was regularly called a chink. Remember being called "n****r lips" because I have full lips. (WTF.) My mother kept me and my other biracial cousins in the house when the KKK would periodically march down the avenue. And she recalls signs that said, "If you're not white and still out after sundown, consider yourself warned." Or something to that effect.

So even though our move to Texas in my teens was a little better (the racism there was "softer"), and I moved to NYC as soon as I could at 19, PART of Arkansas taught me the ugly side of Americans for sure.

But then there was Andy Griffith. Surely no one on that show would have made fun of me for being a "boat person," even if I had never been one? (Was a US citizen because of my father, so left Vietnam where I was born by plane. But I remember thinking as a kid, how cruel to make fun of people because they had to escape a wartorn place by any means necessary!)

Sigh. Arkansas. Hope it's moved on!

Matlock is still one of my favorite shows. I have watched it from the very beginning. I still watch the re-runs, too. I will have a hotdog in your honor today.

R.I.P Mr. Griffith

RIP Dear Andy.
