Nora Ephron Has Passed Away

Just three quick seconds after I posted my post about how the Internet prematurely declared that Nora Ephron was floating up to heaven, The Washington Post reports that she passed away tonight. Nora was 71.

TMZ says that Nora suffered from cancer, but The Washington Posts says that she died of complications from the blood disorder myelodysplasia.

As I wrote in my post below, Nora basically wrote every single movie Meg Ryan was in and if you want to know the names of all the movies she wrote and/or directed, just look in the boot box marked "rainy days/sad days/eat raw cookie dough" days under your bed and you'll find every single one of her movies.

Nora is survived by her husband Nicholas Pileggi and her two sons.

Rest in peace, Nora Ephron.

Well she could have been a bitch...why not? Creative person in the middle of dealing with issues and people during a project, could be under pressures or stresses, may snap or take anger out on others. I'm not excusing it. Just sayin'. "

Agreed GG. My boss, whom I love, can be a real bastard. He's mercurial, he's grouchy and he's a task master, but he's also brilliant and if you perform at his level, he's the best boss you could ask for. I'm sure there are people that will cheer when he dies, but I will not one of them. I think that's very true of successful people. Not everyone is going to love them and as MK would say, not a single fuck was given (by them). *shrugs*

I'm with Literary Lioness. I understand and respect that pattycake had a bad experience with her, but full stop, Nancy Myers is NOT a better writer than Nora Ephron. There's just no comparison. Also can we stop with the 'This is person is comes from privileged background, therefore their credentials are invalid' bullshit? And to be clear: this is coming from someone who is straight up working class. My parents struggle to this day to make ends meet. Coming from money does not invalidate someone's talent. Did it likely allow her to persue her writing? Yes, it probably did, but that doesn't take away from her talents as writer. Nor does her allegedly nasty attitude.

Fuckery is what fuckery does.

Nora Ephron was the heartbeat of New York. Nora loved her home town and wrote several essays about her love of NYC.

I will miss her wonderful quirky-ness.

My condolences to her husband and her two sons.

And for you nay-sayers. I am on the verge of 70 and I don't appreciate your negative commnents! Don't walk in other people's shoes until you do so! Old age is a privilege that many of us relish. Ask Michael and his Mother!

I too remember her for her food. That and her essays. Most of her movies are forgettable to me (not my preferred genre) but she was a damn good writer. She didn't make excuses for coming from money but she wasn't pretentious about it either. Her mother was a pioneer in the industry, but Nora earned her place in it on her own. She was a hard worker and didn't even start off wanting anything to do with Hollywood. Haters are going to hate when a woman is successful, driven, and particular. It's a shame that women will hate women who do just that. An ice cold diet coke with a straw is not stepping all over people.

RIP Nora. Your voice will be missed.

I understand you had personal experience with Ephron, but Meyers is NOT as good of a writer as Nora Ephron.

Whatever Ephron might have been personally, she was an incredible writer with a fabulous ear for dialogue and writing female characters. Sally was one of the few characters who actually resembled women in life. She wasn't a hooker, a mother, or the arm candy to a man. Heartburn was also an incredible novel.

Ephron sucked as a director, but she definitely could write.

I always thought she was a hack, but there are few "good" writers in Hollywood anymore anyway. Silkwood was awesome. And Heartburn. RIP

while year after year, i enjoyed re-watching most of the movies she wrote, by far my favorite was SILKWOOD.
no other movie has ever effected me so much.. left the theatre with my friends. no one speaking, i realized later after getting home that None of us had spoken at all before going to our cars..

btw, its one of her few movies that does NOT "shown" on pay/cable etc..

Well, almost everyone that works in Hollywood is pretty much a cunt. That is unfortunately just a fact. I would not say that for those that work "below the line" (crew, staff, etc.), but I WOULD say that for the "power brokers".

In any case, RIP.

Sad about this. Ephron was well known in Hollywood as being, well, "difficult," but she made several very good movies, wrote a few others, was a highly opinionated, very entertaining writer of essays and the great novel Heartburn.

But the thing I loved her for the most were her food articles and her recipes, the best of which are scattered throughout Heartburn. She really was a great food writer. Her recipes for linguine alla checca (the real thing, not the dreck you get at the Olive Garden), bacon hash and peach pie were and are fabulous. She tracked down a recipe for cabbage strudel that is wonderful. She was a true "food person," and I'll miss her for that alone.

You've Got Mail is the most re-watchable movie in the history of mankind. I don't think it's all that special but every single time I see it on TV, I cannot change the channel.

I'm the same way. I don't own a copy of it but if it's on TV, I am watching it.

Lindsay Lohan's costar's nalgas flew her so close to the sun that they both exploded into stardust that still lights up Hollywood.

I gotta agree witchu, waterbucket. I lost count how many times I've seen You've Got Mail. It's just one of those movies I catch midway and watch to the end. Love how she romanticized NYC in her films too. So, ok not groundbreaking stuff but always witty and by today's standards, her female characters were geniuses. RIP Nora.

You are thinking of Heartburn, which was played by Meryl Streep as Nora. Nora wrote that about her first marriage to wunderkind Robert (Watergate) Woodward.

She wrote When Harry Met Sally...! I didn't like anything she directed, but I LOVE that film.

People with myelodysplasia convert to AML (a form of leukemia), so it's likely she had both and why sources are citing different reasons for her death.

No, you're a total realist.

Some of her stuff I love, and some was okay. But with her passing I fear the era of great romantic comedies has passed too. She had a distinct style and no one else compares.
