Notify the principal of the incident. The principal then notifies each set of parents that their child will no longer be allowed to ride the bus if the behavior continues. Yes the parents will scream and might even threaten litigation. Parents are good at that.

But if school administrators are afraid of the fallout when a bully's parents threaten/sue the school district, then they must also be afraid of the fallout when a victim's parents threaten/sue the school district.

Anyone that has EVER worked in the US school system knows that your hands are completely tied when it comes to shit like this. You can't do ANYTHING to these little shits without YOU getting in trouble from your employers and from the asshole parents.
Thankfully I myself have never had to teach little devil children, but several of my inlaws are teachers and every single one of them have horror stories about demon children they had to deal with.

Too bad they can't bring back how it used to be when I was in elementary school. You acted like a little shithead, you got sent to the principles office where he had a nice BIG paddle waiting for your ass.

Yep. She deserves the money that people have donated to her.

I hope the school district will find her a job that she would be better suited for and would be more rewarding for her, like something in an elementary school or preschool. It takes a certain type of person to deal with middle schoolers. And the school district has some serious bus discipline problems that they need to address.

Why should she accept an apology through a statement? That's a fucking cop-out. The kids need to say it to her face, in private. No cameras, no press, just the kids, Karen, and their parents. I'd go further to say those brats need to do some hard time doing community service work at a nursing home, and not just playing checkers with the folks.

Whether or not she was qualified for her job, she was treated like shit and should receive a proper apology.

Goddamn, she's not golden voice.

I am not saying the school staff is totally wrong either, I guess I am simply upset at the immediate backlash with this lady. She did absolutely nothing wrong. Maybe if she had done more she even then would not have gotten help - believe me I've seen it happen. I beat my head against the wall at a private school for 11 years that had a bunch of total do nothings in administration that always sided with parents no matter what. A lot of schools are like that, so who are we to judge her? I doubt this is an isolated situation at this school, things like this do not happen in a vacuum. So leave the goddamn lady alone, Jesus Christ, people are trying to be nice and now that gets criticized too. Some people complain about everything. Fuck it.

I may have told this story before-- this past school year was the first time my two daughters have attended public school and rode the bus. Their bus driver, Miss Raquel, doesn't put up with any amount of shit on that bus. The kids had assigned seats even. One day a substitute driver drove the bus. The kids didn't act up, but they failed to sit in their assigned seats. (the sub didn't care where the kids sat). The next day, one of the kids told Miss Raquel that noone sat in their assigned seats the day before. HELL TO THE NO. When I asked the girls how school went that day, they whined: "Miss Raquel is really mad at us". They were scared shitless. That's how you run a school bus.

The internets can be amazing, but $530,000 for just being videotaped being bullied, I love the old lady too, and the kids were horrendous, but dayum, I went through verbal and emotional hell growing up, and never got so much as a fart in my direction.

It's precisely because so many thousands of people can relate to her that this donation fund has grown so fast. These kinds of things (even when they take on a life of their own like this) make us all flashback to similar situations.

If those kids really meant it they'd send her a hand written letter or apologise IN PERSON away from the cameras. I don't care that they are children, this era of total and utter entitlement and bad behaviour without consequences HAS to stop. This may be an isolated incident but it's indicative of the times we live in and I'm getting sick of it.

SansFards, every time I went to her office I made sure to make her like uncomfortable. Fuck that shit - my kids welfare comes first. When he got into a fight I made him apologize to the kid and to his parents. I did I ever get the same curtesy? No!

Bring back shaming. Put the little fuckers name in the local paper and school paper.

So she's not only completely incompetent at her job, she's incapable of allowing a child to apologize to her unless it's on her terms? Where was all this righteous indignation when half the fucking world wasn't backing her up?

@Gardening Girl, that is appalling what happened to your kid. He is lucky to have a mom who raised hell on his behalf, and I'm glad he's out of that toxic environment.

I didn't experience bullying in school thankfully, but I did deal with workplace bullying. It sapped all my energy and made me in to a grouchy bitch for the better part of a year. It took a week of going home in tears for my s.o. to tell me "so, what are you going to do about it? how are you going to fix this?" And that's when I decided, alright....enough of this shit. I am not an assertive person by nature, and it took a week of dithering and rehearsing in front of the mirror before The Final Confrontation. But I did it, and it was awesome.

I went over to the woman who was making my life hell with her passive aggressive insults, and I looked her right in the eye and I said "let me make this very clear so that we have no misunderstandings. If you ever disrespect or insult me again, I am going to document the incident in writing, and I am going to send it straight to HR. You are making an uncomfortable work environment for me, and it stops TODAY." Then she was like omggggg you got it all wrong!!! because that's what bullies do--they make YOU out to be the bad guy, and that you're misunderstanding their intent.

yeah yeah, TL;DR. But that's why I donated to Karen....because shit like this needs to stop. The more public shaming, the better. Kadooze to 4chan for getting this out there.

Historically bullies have gotten away with shit because the teachers/administration looked the other way and viewed it as kids just being kids. The schools have to step up and try as hard as they can to put a stop to it. They can't stop everything, but they must try. There are anti-bullying programs out there like Olweus that help towards eliminating bullying. Why not try?

It's not the bus monitor's fault that the kids are douchebags but she should have reported them. If the principal is not supportive of the staff then there's a big problem at that school district.

doncorleone, I agree with what you say. My youngest some was a victim of bullies while in middle school. He has graduated from HS and is STILL attending therapy. No matter how many times we complained we'd get weak and basically unsympathetic responses. Well the staw broke when one of my son's tormentors broke into my son's gym locker and (no lie) shit on his gym clothes and then stuffed them down a toilet and clogged it. The little fucker only got caught cos he boasted and those kids reported him. I looked at that principal and told her I hope that she was glad with her anti-bullying policy because it was a load of bull shit and worthless. That if that brute was an example of her student body I would rather have my son go to school in the hood. We took him out of that school which was in a better neighborhood and put him in a school that was two blocks away from our home. He was much more happier there. Well as happy as a kid with trust issues...he thought teachers were full of shit with their puffed up talk. It has taken time but he is no longer angry and has learned to trust the other kids and make friends. But even though the administration has red tape they can at least try and do something and not give parents just a lot high sounding oration.

PS - little fucker was made to buy my son new gym clothes before he was kicked out of the district. HA!

Sorry, don't buy it. There was a school shooting in my hometown. An 11 year old and a 13 year old did it. The teacher was considered an effective disciplinarian. She and four of her female students were shot to death. Is it her fault she died? No. Did she know those kids were trouble? Yes. What was she supposed to do about it? Brain the little fuckers? Maybe yes to that, but she would have gotten fired. If she had gotten fired, she would still be alive today. Then the person who replaced her would have been shot to death.

Unless a person works within the school system, it is very hard to understand the magnitude of bureaucracy present in schools today. There is enormous "passing the buck" going on, a lot of appeasement for fear of lawsuits and whatnot. Please don't judge this woman. A news story said because of her hearing disability she din't hear a lot of what they said to her at the time, which does not make it okay. The kids acted abhorrently PERIOD. End of story. Just because she did not "fight back" does not erase how appalling the kids were to her.

Crazyinjapan, I don't think anyone is excusing what those brats did. But all schools have anti bullying policies and disciplinary procedures and I fir one am curious as to why nothing had been done about what seems to be a systemic problem. Did Karen never report what was going on? Did the head teacher not give a damn?Had these kids been warned already and should things have been stepped up? Someone dropped the ball. If a school knew a shooting was imminent and did nothing then yes they would be partially responsible of course. Schools and local authorities need to use their power and enforce their rules because we all know that horrible kids do and always have existed.

Since there weren't any requirements put on the funds she can spend it on anything she likes including retirement, helping her family, or a truckload of crack. I read a great book called: "Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads. It focuses on how often times children are a direct reflection of their parents and how to deal with them. It reinforces the cliche: the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. My favorite chapter is the one that describes the different personality types: the side kicks, the outcasts, the queen bees, etc.

The real responsibility of a bus monitor is to get the kids on and off the bus safely, and to make sure no one misses their stop. Also, to help the driver clean the bus afterwards. That's what job descriptions say anyway.
But of course, when dealing with middle school kids you have to walk the line of hard ass with them. Anyone who has dealt with kids that age knows it's the worst age, and after a while, they can wear you down, especially at her age.

But no, her job isn't to kick ass, but it would have helped if she could make them BELIEVE she would though.

Of course, that wouldn't be necessary if parents taught their kids some basic fundamental manners on how to behave when riding the bus.

Don corleone, I am from a whole family of teachers and my 2 best friends are teachers too. I am not doubting that many families are shitty and entitled, but a good teacher can keep order within her classroom and employ disciplinary procedures when appropriate. This woman here is not a teacher, she obviously cannot deal with unruly children, she clearly has no support and should not be in this position.

Kids are brutal! I recall the first time I rode a school bus and it was terrifying. I was raised in a multicultural home with different languages being spoken and a eclectic array of people within my family's circle (Black, Asian, European) so when I moved to a hick area of Southern California many, many years ago (they existed) it was shocking to say the least. When I first walked onto that school bus I was called the most vile things I had never heard of. I was six years old by the way and a tiny thing. Gum was put into my long beautiful dark hair, was punched and thrown around by the "bigger" kids mostly boys. When I told my mother after a couple of these incidents, my mother accompanied me to the bus one morning had a quick talk with the bus driver who allowed her (this was before camera and policing of schools) to enter the bus he also pointed to which kids caused the most trouble. My dear little mother who is tough as nails (she survived World War II) grab the boys who had been abusing us little ones on the bus dragged them outside of the bus had some words with them, she didn't allow me to hear, returned them to their seats and gave me a kiss goodbye for the day. After that day never did any of those boys ever lay a finger on me ever again. I asked my mother years later what she told them and she said flat out "I told them if they ever wanted to wake up alive again safe in their beds with their flesh intact they would best keep their hands off you." Kids need adults to put fear into them once in awhile, and I hope this old lady gets her cash money so she can have a peaceful retirement!
