One last thing, kids bullying others is a RED FLAG, they are waving it for other responsible adults to notice and to help them address it before it's too late. I've taken my son out of the public school system because it's just so horrible. I remember junior high school and there were some really mean kids, but the majority of kids were nice. Now I'm surprised when I meet a nice kid. I don't know how parents are going to take back the night with their kids, but they'd better start trying. A lot of these kids do not get better with age.

I hope she has a nice vacation away from these brats.

what was she supposed to do? stand up in the middle of the aisle and have a screaming fit? get up in a kid's face drill spitting drill sgt-style and have a throw down? grab one of them and throw them down in the seat? drag them to another seat?

i think there is a very small -- very small -- percentage of people who can stop other people in their tracks with a word or a look. imo, those of you who are saying she could have done a better job are projecting a little "i would have handled it differently" or "i could have done it better."

yes, Karen, you could have shattered those kids with a couple of words. i could have too. but i think we are the exception to the rule.
i don't see any reason that a school district should think that a less,er, "assertive" person should not be able to keep decorum on a suburban school bus. we ain't talking Bed Stuy here.

as an aside -

i had a volunteer job teaching group ex at a Y for years. i had several instances of assholes coming outta the weight room into the studio to get equipment while i was teaching, including people who actually walked right in front of me between me and the class. Each time there WAS a verbal throwdown and they ended up leaving the room without whatever the fuck they came in there for.

BUT, each time, i got written up for it. getting written up tastes delicious to me, tells me i did something right. but, to someone like Ms. Klein, a write up could be the most embarrassing thing to happen to her in her school system career. some people toe the policy line just to stay in the woodwork

She was the bus monitor for crying out loud! You talk to someone like that who outranks you in the military and guess what happens? The same should happen in "civilian" life (no pun re the word civilian)These kids need to know the rules of life, they are the in the lower end of the chain of command in life. Too bad. They need to know what kind of speech can land you in prison. And for the school: these kids made threats! young or not they MUST be taken out of that school with behavior details on their academic records. There are restraining orders on people who make threats etc, and here you are gonna keep a kid around in the same school and district with a history of demonic behavior because he's a kid. I think NOT!

Twelve years of Catholic school and Italian parents-- I would have been killed TWICE if I had been involved anywhere near that kind of disrespect. My son is 13 and I've ALWAYS taught him to treat other people the way that he would want to be treated. He'll talk back to us but would never act that way in school or to any authority figure-- teachers always tell me how polite and helpful he is and I'm proud of that-- I can't do much about the other kids and just hope that goodness prevails. Well the school year is out, but I think the school said a punishment would be chosen and doled out in the coming school year. In a way that's pretty great because it gives the kids the summer to dread the punishment.

The families are apparently receiving death threats which is probably their main focus right now. No matter what they do I'm sure it won't be enough for the masses baying for blood. Those kids are little shits and need to be severely punished, but it's sad that people respond to mob mentality with a really scary mob mentality.

Why were they on the school bus if school was out? No matter when this occurred there is no reason to wait to punish them, and that just gives the evil kids and their evil parents time to lawyer up and make excuses and counter attack the bus monitor. I read about this one case of cyberbullying, where a girl made a derogatory video intended to harass one of her classmates and put it up on Youtube. The perp was suspended from school, and what did the father do? he DEFENDED his daughter, saying she had a right to freedom of speech off school property.

There was a similar case on the Dr. Phil show. A girl took a cell phone pic of a female classmate while she was in the shower at a sleepover party and sent it out to the entire school. The girl was expelled and her father defended her to Dr. Phil saying what she did was "no big deal" and "not serious enough to warrant expulsion."

However the victim's parents got this douchebag in the end. They ended up filing a civil lawsuit and won a huge judgment. The girl's parents ended up having to take out a second mortgage on their house to pay them off. Maybe if more parents started suffering some repurcussions they'd be more inclined to keep their offspring in line.

Ikoli, I am really sorry you underwent anything close to this at such a vulnerable time in your life. In my high school I was begging to be teased - a nerd, braces, glasses, and total spaz - but not one person ever made me feel bad about myself. I think I am older than you and I believe things have gotten much worse since my time. Nowadays, only a very few people take responsibility for themselves let alone their heinous offspring.

There is an episode of South Park where the kids call in Bin Laden to wipe out the Jersey Shore people. That's what is required here.

I am also sure that the other kids who are targets of these bullies felt so much better seeing the person that is supposed to be standing up for them and protecting them standing up to these bullies like she did...must be nice to know they have someone to turn to when they're in trouble on the bus...

There will be no piercings or tattoos till they leave my home (hence responsible enough to pay their bills-make their own choices) And however much college you do in the field of your choice will determine your own standard of living because NO ONE gets a free ride in life.
They also would not dare disrespect ANY elder like this because they have a military father who doesn't play that, and my chancla game is for real, and if we get slack on that, their grandmas and aunts would have no problem fixing it/me.

1. product of a 1 parent household
2. loads of unsupervised time at home
3. parent working so others "raising" them
4. parent emotionally abusive to kids
5. loads of exposure to desensitizing

6. product of a school system paralyzed by

It's really not about blaming the victim. Regardless of what she should, could or might have done, those kids were out of control as was the situation. Let's remember the bus driver is there to drive...so the monitor does what?

Of course she can't physically respond, but there are verbal warnings, and there are VERBAL WARNINGS, motherfucker. Do you really think this woman is going to do anything more than this to prevent the same things from happening to a child? I guaran-fucking-tee this type of thing happened on this bus before and Ms. Milquetoast sat and did nothing.

Imagine that this same video was shown with one difference: the target was another child and this monitor responded in the same way. People would be screaming for blood.

I don't recall what Greece was like but all of Rochester is pretty middle class. But, kids are tough up there. When I moved to another state and there were boy cheerleaders I thought, Rochester kids would have run them out of the school.

Many stories about American tragedies are from Joyce Carol Oates about her hometown in a place not far from Greece.
Jim Kunstler has a blog dedicated to the rotting decay that are towns like this. He wrote about it in "Home from Nowhere." He also gives awards to the worst architectural "eyesore of the month" Rochester and surroundings is always a front runner.

I can't feel anything but glad that she's going to get some money. Lucky breaks are all a lottery anyway. Some people win the sperm lottery by being born into wealth - that's just luck, nothing earned or deserved - some people win the actual lottery - that's just luck too. There are of course plenty of deserving people out there who have suffered more and didn't get the break she just did but she didn't ask for it. Also I think that her windfall is a just a nice by-product of an outpouring of anti-bullying sentiment. That message is the most important thing. Probably not. These days, teachers aren't allowed to do much in the way of disciplining students. I heard one horror story about a teacher who tried to break up a violent fight between two of her students in an urban school, and....SHE got in trouble for assault! I wish I were making this up. The kids rule the roost, and they know it.

Time to bring back reform schools for violent and disruptive students who mess it up for everyone else. Not sure if these kids fall under that category, but I'm willing to bet the ringleader has a touch of the sociopath in him.
