Rodney King Has Passed Away
Rodney King was found dead in the backyard of his home in Rialto, CA early this morning. For those of you young hos who are like, "Who's Rodney King?" Please tell your 7th grade history teacher to give a long lesson on the 1991 brutal police beating of Rodney King, which lead to an acquittal, which led to the massive L.A. Race Riots.
There's not a lot of confirmed details, but TMZ is on this hard and has heard a few things. Rodney's fiancee, Cynthia Kelley, is telling friends that he spent the entire day yesterday boozing and smoking weed at the house. When she called it a night and went to bed at 2 this morning, Rodney was still drinking and was in a good mood. Then at around 5 this morning, Cynthia was awoken by Rodney's screams. She found Rodney naked and banging on the glass. Cynthia asked him what was wrong before she ran to grab her phone, to call 911 presumably. Cynthia then heard a splash and she ran to the backyard. Cynthia found Rodney lying at the bottom of the pool. The paramedics showed up and were unable to bring Rodney back. Rodney was only 47 years old.
After the riots and a federal trial in 1993, which ended with two of the officers found guilty, Rodney King was in a bad way. Rodney battled addiction and was arrested a couple of times. In 2009, Rodney was on both Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, and to me came across as a nice, quiet, sad, troubled (I hate that word too, but I couldn't think of another one) guy who really wanted to get his shit together.
Oh, and if you haven't been to Facebook today, you might want to stay away unless you really want to see a dozen statutes that say: "Can't all just..." you know the rest.

Because it spoke to the larger issue of perceived "open season" on blacks by the LA cops who have a brutal record for beatdowns. Nobody deserves to be beaten to near death for running the cops. You can argue he deserved a few good shots for being an idiot but over 50 beats by four cops and the need for a 5 hour emergency surgery is just insane and IMO indefensible.
Deb, well put. We have a justice system, and it doesn't involve police brutality. I took a seminar in college that explored how so people can watch a video and see two different things, and how we're willing to excuse terrible behavior from the police because we "need" them.
Poor man. He didn't ask to be the poster boy for the racial, ethnic and class wars of the early '90s. He never could shake that mantle, and he had a wicked disease too.
I wonder if there was any foul play involved...

The name Rodney King was familiar, but I thought he was like an Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson figure, and I thought he was dead already. R.I.P.

I watched Celeb Rehab and he came across as genuine and down to earth, but a real true alcoholic, not terribly surprised by his death cause the monkey on his back was huge....

I know that this is a very controversial issue, and that King was in trouble with the law before the incident. And yes, he was in a dangerous high-speed chase with police which could have killed someone. For that, he deserved jail time, not a beating within an inch of his life.
Just my opinion. I have less respect for the dirtballs who used his beating and the subsequent acquittal of the officers as an excuse to raise hell and loot.

Granted I was young when this shit went down, but I did read the accounts of what happen, and this piece of shit was driving drunk, did not stop when he saw lights and nearly caused an accident, going over 100 mph.Also he had been in trouble in the past for assaulting and robbing a clerk at a liquor store.
