Queen Latifah Did Not Come Out At Long Beach Pride

And no, she didn't come out in that picture by making the scissor sign. Keep waiting (or don't), bitches.

When Queen Latifah performed at Long Beach Pride and told the audience that she's happy to be with "her people," many hos, including this one, thought that was her subtle way of letting us know that she gets the mustache on the regular if you know what I mean. But Queef Latifah tells Entertainment Weekly that she hasn't given up her space in the closet and whose crotch she puts her lips on at the end of the night is in her personal file and you'll never have the password for it. Queen said that when she called the audience "her people" she meant that they were all there together to fight against hatred and bullies. You know, some U.N.I.T.Y. shit.

On the news that she came out at Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride: “That definitely wasn’t the case. I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”

On going to a gay club with Tupac: “To me, doing a gay pride show is one of the most fun things. My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco. Tupac happened to be in town, so he came to kick it with me. This was the early ’90s. And the boys were like, ‘Take your shirt off, Tupac!’ He wasn’t doing that. But we had a blast in there.”

On what she meant by calling the audience "her people": “I know that the most important thing and the only thing I have to give is love. When people are going through hatred and bullying, the biggest thing to fight that is love. So that’s all I encouraged my audience to do that night: to share their light and share their love. Period.”

Okay, so she's basically just Richard Simmons-ing it. Queen knows that we know that she wrestles clitty with her tongue. I guess it's not her time to fully come out yet, but does she know that when she officially comes out she gets a 3-pack of Hanes white tank tops, a gift certificate to IKEA and a screener for the new season of The Real L Word? Because that could be a dealmaker.

I just think the fact that it's 2012 and people still have to "come out" is silly. Why is it even a thing? Do I introduce myself as Bree and tell people I'm straight? Then why do people expect gays and lesbians to just throw it out there like it's their first name every time they go somewhere or do something? Not everyone wants to be a spokesperson for something like this and it's sad that in this decade, they still need one. People should just be people, sexual orientation should never even be an issue or subject of discussion. Even though it is, I don't think every gay person or especially gay celebrity should be forced into being a posterchild for the cause. Some people just want to live their lives like everybody else.

TOPANGA's picture

The Queen can do whatever she wants. I understand why she probably wont "come out". Because once she does, that will be her title from then on. Queen Latifah, the "lesbian". Maybe she wants it to always be about her talents and not her sexual orientation.

Listen, QL's reluctance to come out isn't for saving whales, cleaning up after Katrina, defeating teabaggers, stopping bullying, or any respectable cause. Keeping her secret, and I use the term loosley, is to not offend homophobes, and to keep her income high. What's to admire about that?

Hey Mr Sal :) hope all is well in CR

Yeah bad analogy but get your point about "forcing" yet she's the one beating around the bush and milking the publicity every once in a while...if you want to keep quiet and private then do just that. That goes for answering these "prying" questions as well.

I slightly apologize for my more than usual outspokenness and defensiveness of my gays. Milwaukee pride this weekend and Chicago later in the month has me in a don't mess with my gays attitude :) I will cut several bitches for them :)

She has a right to her privacy. However, now she's just denying and spinning her OWN words. If you're not going to confirm/deny it--fine. But stick to it.

---

I don't think so. She just doesn't feel like making a public announcement.

Had she performed at a Latino pride festival instead, I don't think people would've had trouble understanding what she meant when she called them "my people".

She's never disclosed her personal relationships, as far as I remember. If she wants to keep it that way, fine. Missy Elliot is happy that way too.

Foxxy, GreenLatte, Sal and everyone, agree with ya that it's important for someone to come out if they wish to! It's also understandable to be upset that someone did not want to be a role model and preferred to stay in the closet but I cannot take the view that PerezHilton took to force people out. That is reprehensible. One never knows what personal issues someone is facing in real life and to say "Hey you should come out for our cause" is unfair. Take comfort that today more people are sharing the information but respect that if they want keep it private, they should be allowed to do so.

Nothing prevents us from becoming role models ourselves does it? Let others be.

Hey GTL. You're right and it's likely a bad analogy. My point is that no one should force you to do something you don't want to, or to guilt you into it.

I just don't understand the obsession with trying to out people like Anderson, Jodie or her. The same media lets certain celebrities off the hook for whatever reason, until they casually come out, like this Matt Bomer dude who is suddenly everywhere.

Here's the difference, in my opinion: Latifah doesn't talk about her personal life in the media, period. She doesn't deny being a lesbian, she just doesn't talk about personal stuff. Cruise and Travolta both adamantly deny being gay, and they constantly reference their families/private lives in the media.

If it were me, I would be out and vocal, because talky-talky is how I roll. That's my right and my choice. On the same token - if she chooses not to make it an issue, that's her prerogative. As Michael K said, she knows that we know. No big deal either way.

I have no respect for that woman anymore.

She's a COWARD. Or she doesn't feel like getting into the fray.
She owes it to the gay community to come out. You sound just like Pigez HiltonIt's the only way the gay community becomes stonger. No, it isn't the only way. It's called UNITY. We must stand together. It's the only way we can make progress.By forcing people out who are not ready, for whatever reason, to come out? Who are you to make that decision for them?

Staying in the closet gives the impression that she's ashamed of herself - that she has something ugly to hide.Only to people who are ashamed themselves.

Coming out living out and being politically active DOES change laws... It gives a voice, a face, a name, and a cause to the minority. Coming out, living out will prevent laws like the recent one in North Carolina from being passed. The more gays people know, work with, live with; the least likely those people will vote for someone or something that infringes on the RIGHTS of someone they care about!

The ignorant, bigoted, and "conservative" are politically active and being indifferent or quiet is not the way to stop them...

I disagree Zonko. By that logic, if you're Irish, do you owe it to your community to be out on the St. Paddy's day parade?

Not everybody needs/wants to be an outspoken member of whichever community he/she is born into, let alone does she owe it to anybody else but herself and the person she's in a relationship with.

I don't blame you for feeling like you have the right to know or to tell her to come out. The media's relentlessly prying into celebrities' lives is what make us feel entitled to know every little detail about them and to be upset at them when we feel they are not honest to us.

many of us get that point. combine your comment with WithinReason's. everybody with a brain knows she's a lesbian already even though there has been no press release -- as Within and others pointed out, Dana is "out" in private even if "Queen Latifah" is not.

knowing that -- do gay Black etc youth really need her to put out a press release to be inspiring? is Charlie Butthead going to really go -- "hey, i've always liked Queen Latifah so i need to think about my gay hating?" when the Charlie Butthead types turn around doesn't the stimulus usually come from some personal experience where they have to confront that one of their own loved ones is gay? is knowing an entertainment celebrity is gay going to make much of a difference to a hater?

as for Zonko -- you are another one where the avatar is speaking volumes about the commenter who picked it

Staying in the closet gives the impression of SHAME.

**********************

Not shame, but privacy.

I don't recall anyone who made a public announcement about being gay that was a surprise to anyone, so maybe the other people just don't see a need to make a production of it.

Green Tea Latte's picture

Because gays and lesbians STILL don't have equal rights or protection under the law in the country/states that they serve, pay taxes, and live productive lives! :)

Having normal non-hot mess role models and advocates even quiet ones (it is possible to lead by example while being private and quiet) is a great step toward acceptance and reducing the stigma associated with coming and living out. :)

@Hockey Fan and @dallas:

you idiots are missing the point:

there will ALWAYS be racism and bigotry !!!!!

EQUAL RIGHTS are a different issue !

Did you know that black people did not have the lagal right to marry white people in the U.S. until 1967 ?
Supreme Court case: Loving vs. Virginia.
Google it.

Blacks had to use seperate water fountains and bathrooms until the 60's.

It's called PROGRESS.

Gays do not have equal rights in the U.S. yet.
They are looked upon as second-class citizens.

Staying in the closet gives the impression of SHAME.

And one more thing DALLAS:
You're obviously not "intellectually curious". You might want to start thinking a little deeper.

As long as there are assholes who will hate on and even beat up a person over their sexual orientation and there is a stigma in the entertainment industry over it, no one will be equal. THere are alot of heteros who are afraid of catching the gays or believe that it is awful if one of their precious kids "catch it". This is why people make big news out of it and want to splash it on some cheesy rag.

I don't think someone necessarily has to come out of the closet, but when someone clearly is gay, makes a comment that like that and then gives a statement such as that, it makes her look as though she's hiding.

By people not being true to who they are, it gives other people the idea that it's something to be ashamed about. I'm not saying to make a big announcement about it, but there ARE ways to be casual about such things. i.e. - mention a gf, etc.
Don't be ashamed of who you are, Queen!

If I understand correctly, she neither confirms or denies. She's just exercising her right to live her life in private. But see, if you're a gay person who doesn't wanna speak about it one way or the other… then when you go to a gay event and talk about "my people," you don't get the Jodie Foster benefit.
