Mrs. McCluskey From Desperate Housewives Has Died In Real Life

Kathryn Joosten, who played Karen McKluskey to eye rolling perfect on Desperate Housewives, is now up in heaven after passing away from lung cancer in Westlake Village, CA yesterday. Mrs. McKluskey also died of cancer during the finale of Desperate Housewives. Art imitating real-life sadness. Kathryn was 72.

Those of you who watched The West Wing also know Kathryn as the President's secretary Mrs. Landingham. TVLine says that Kathryn didn't start her acting career until she was 42, but she quickly filled up her IMDB page with roles in Scrubs, Roseanne, Dharma & Greg, Joan of Arcadia, Buffy, My Name Is Earl and dozens of other shows.

Kathryn's rep says that she was surrounded by her family before she passed.

Mrs. McKluskey was one of my favorite characters on DH (yes, I watched that mess till the very painful end), because she didn't let children fuck with her, perfected the art of the eye roll, was nosy as all hell and regularly verbally slapped a trick down with the truth. We should all hope to be just like that when we enter the Metumacil phase of our lives. Rest in peace, Mrs. McKluskey.

Our packs here have gruesome visual warnings on them...really gruesome of late. The other day, my husband picked up my brand, which had a guy with a hole in his throat on it. He felt-penned that hole into an ascot before he handed them to me so I wouldn't be repulsed. Thoughtful of him, and I laughed, but then, in a way, I felt like your dad....WTF am I *DOING*?

Well, you're smokers--doubt that other stuff. I know it's hard to quit. My dad and mom smoked when they were young. I recall my dad saying he quit when, the morning after a big soiree, he caught himself going thru the ashtrays for butts.

Yessir. (I tried a few at 13 and they made me ill, so I never picked up the lousy habit. Picked up some other lousy habits, but at least my lungs are fairly clean. :) )

She smoked for 45 years. Even if you only smoked when younger, as a lot of folks did in, say, the 50s and 60s, you can still get cancer in late adulthood.

They didn't make her. She wanted to bring attention to lung cancer because it is the least funded of the common types of cancer.

RIP. I didn't watch much Desperate Housewives, but saw her in the final shows.

Great lady!! Love her story that she took up acting later in life after her divorce to make a few bucks and became one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood!

Kathryn was great on 'Desperate Housewives' and all of the other shows she was on. She was adorable and I'm sorry she's gone. RIP.

My grandfather never smoked and he died of lung cancer 25 years ago. I agree that it's often underrepresented or misunderstood.

I didn't watch RH but I might have seen her in other shows. She sounds like she was a really cool lady.

Agreed, jersey. Too many non-smokers (like me) have the attitude of "lung cancer victims have only themselves to blame". But seeing Kathryn's recent interviews, I sympathize with her position. It shouldn't mean that lung cancer sufferers don't deserve research and funding. Plus tens of thousands of non-smokers get the disease, too. Many people have addictions that may ultimately harm them. Smoking happens to be one that kills a large number.

didn't watch DH, but i do remember her as mrs landingham on TWW, and she was wonderful. RIP. :(

Actually, Kathryn welcomed it. Lung cancer kills more than all other cancers put together, but it has the lowest funding and the lowest attention paid to it as a public health issue.

"When Marc Cherry told Joosten of the story arc, she said, “Get it right!…I have no fear of delving into this storyline. This is a terrific idea to get the word out there and bring lung cancer awareness into the spotlight."

Like MK I watched DH till the bitter end. At least her suffering is over, rest in peace Mrs McK. You made Sunday nights watching DH a pleasure. Wonder what the famewhoring ladies of DH will wear to the funeral...you know they're getting their most dramatic mourning 'fits ready...
