Disco Is Truly Dead: Donna Summer Has Passed Away
I think I just broke the record for the most "What the....?"s shouted out at in ten seconds when I read at TMZ that the Queen of Disco Donna Summer has twirled up to heaven at the young age of 63. TMZ says that Donna was privately battling cancer and didn't want the public to know about it. None of this has been confirmed by Donna's family or rep yet.
UPDATE: Donna's family confirmed that she passed away late last night in Florida. They says that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continue legacy." Many people close to Donna are as shocked everyone else. Donna was in the middle of recording a new album and as of two weeks ago she seemed fine. TMZ also says that Donna had lung cancer and believes she got it from breathing in toxic particles after the World Trade Center attack.
This is just sad and if another disco ball never spins again, I'll be okay with that. I was going to list all of Donna's hits that helped to define disco, but instead I'm going to tell you to think of all the songs you twerked your nalgas during 70s night at a gay club. Also, think of the song that they play at the end of every wedding you've ever been to. That's your list right there.
Donna is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano and her three daughters.

I've been a fan for as long as I can remember, my brother got me into her because he used to play her vinyls. Many happy memories come from days I spent listening to them all day. A true lady and in a league of her own, all pop singers that came after her are really indebted. RIP Miss Summer.

Aside from the fact that I'm a pudding' chaser, MK and I have lots in common. Out of her extensive discography, I Feel Love is my favorite as well. What a dancer that was.
Really shocked at this one as she seemed so healthy and up until very recently was the only veteran diva who still had their old voice - her old sparring partner Babs has gone a bit shakier recently.
Her work with Giorgio Moroder went way beyond disco and was groundbreaking and legendary, inventing types of dance music decades before it became mainstream. She never did get that induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. RIP Disco Queen.
Sad, sad news...talented, gorgeous and always elegant. RIP, Donna. :-(

Some of my earliest memories include Donna Summer's music! I was born in 1975 the youngest and ONLY boy out of 4 childrens. I remember listening to MacArthur Park with my mom in her '73 Buick Riveria and dancing to Hot Stuff and Enough is Enough with my three older sisters... yeah, I turned out gay! Go figure! I reacquainted myself with Donna's music once I came out in the mid 1990s. I Feel Love is still the shit! Thank you Donna Summer for the music and memories!

Exactly correct. There had to be a whole chemical cocktail created by the 9/11 dust/debris that was unfortunately aspirated by so many people. I don't doubt at all that she contracted lung cancer because of that.

I didn't know Donna Summer lived downtown or anywhere near the WTC. I live in NYC, live in Manhattan, was here when it happened, biked down to the area after the buildings went down and I breathed the awful air for days. (it was truly toxic, anyone can tell you).
I would need to know more about her story and if and how long she lived in Lower Manhattan because I can say she contracted lung cancer from the WTC site.
Remember, Christopher Reeves wife got lung cancer and she didn't smoke at all. My uncle had a lung removed for large cell lung cancer and she didn't smoke, nor did her husband.
Cancer is insidious and you can't really say what contributes.

I totally buy the 911 toxic shit causing cancer. They did this documentary (stfu - I'm a closet nerd who doubles as a blond) on 911 and all the people who are sick now. From the planes to the buildings to the temperatures, it mixed up some shit that has never been seen before chemistry-wise.
She was also stunningly gorgeous and she sang about hookers without shame.
