The Coal Miner's Daughter Is Going To Broadway
......and it's going to star Zooey Deschanel as Loretta Lynn. I'll wait here while you ask Siri, "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?"
At a show at the Grand Ole Opry in 1979, Loretta brought Sissy Spacek onstage and announced she handpicked Sissy to play her in the Coal Miner's Daughter. Loretta did the same thing for Zooey at the Ryman Auditorium last night. According to Playbill, Loretta told the audience:
“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see 'Coal Miner’s Daughter' on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” said Lynn. “I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”
The show has a star, a website and producers, but it doesn't have writers or a director, so it might not even happen. Yeah, I'd rather Loretta Lynn play Loretta Lynn on Broadway (yes, she still can) than a come-to-life Holly Hobbie doll who is too damn lazy to look outside her window to see if it's raining, but I don't have any feelings either way about this. But mostly that's because the only feeling I'm feeling right now is queasiness. It isn't from this news, it's from eating a multi-vitamin with my lunch. See, I try to do something healthy and my body rejects it! I bet this wouldn't have happened if I ate a donut with my lunch. Fuck vitamins!

Zooey has her own line of all organic multivitamins that enhance your ability to state the obvious and sing like Kermit the Frog. 'One-A-Deschanels' are available now on the counter of your local speciality vintage clothing stores.

This play is going to be awful with Zoo-e in the lead. Loretta Lynn, what are you thinking?
probably the same thing they were thinking of when they cast Anne Hathaway as Catwoman *shrug*
Late to the game, but never too late to say Loretta Lynn is The Queen. Love her.
Fuck all the phonies. "Contemporary Country" is neither. Clear Channel country is what I call it and it blows.
I can't stand Zooey, but I think it's because she plays the same character over and over again -- I think someone earlier called it "nauseatingly twee" -- and I just hate that character. This could be a good breakout role for her and show people that she's more than that. I just wonder who is going to play Doo, because NO ONE can top Tommy Lee Jones in that role. Also, remember Levon Helm as Loretta's father?
For Whamo, who asked if they even play old country music in the South these days, you can still hear it on some AM stations,
Contemporary country can suck my contemporary cock.
I am...doll parts...bad skin...doll heart.
Ok. I just clicked.
HOW HAVE I LIVED WITHOUT DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD???
*swoooooooon*
*runs off to iTunes*
@sushi ITA. Nobody can surpass Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Ms. Lynn.
Ironically, Loretta Lynn is as REAL as they come. Why would someone as FAKE and nauseatingly twee as Zoey be cast as her?
Now if there was a play about Marlo Thomas and the story of "That Girl!", Deschanel would be perfectly cast.

I am so fucking sick of Zoey D. She's so fucking overrated.

____________
Yep! Country music today is horrible, it's really pop with a little twang. I'm a "all kinds of music" fan but that new country is just too awful. I love the old school country with patsy cline, loretta, and dolly; same goes with old school r&b. Most of the best music of any genre is from decades ago really.
Loretty is not quirky, odd, or strange(i.e. Zoey). She is a brave, talented, iconic country singer; who was and always will be a proud coal miners daughter.

How scary is this??? I went to the premier of CONVOY with my grandmother in Albuquerque at the racetrack they used in the movie. Jerry Reed, Kris Kristofferson (sp?) and Ali McGraw were there and i got to meet them. It was the best summer to visit my cool-ass grandma. We'd drink bourbon and play cards and I was 15!!

I ❤'d Jerry Reed sooo bad when Smokey and the Bandit came out. Screw Bandit :< I wanted to sit on the Snowman's lap in the big rig racing to Texarkana LOL Just us and Fred.

Austin has a station called KVET that plays country legends and Texas country artists like Pat Green, Charlie Robison, and Kevin Fowler. I don't bother with mainstream country radio today; Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, and Sugarland are not the kind of country I grew up with.

I agree, but you can say that of almost every genre of music today.
I listen to everything from the 20's to today because I happen to love all music, but I have to say todays music just doesn't seem to have as much soul as the music of the past.
imho.

I with you 100% on that on for sure!! as I'd mentioned New Country is pop music with a bit of a twang. Maybe one of our southern Dlisters can tell us but I don't think they even play REAL country music on the radio anymore do they? If they do I would think it's on a country "classic" type of format and a smaller station??
-------------------
Houston has a "country legends" station that initially started out promising back in the early 00's but has since included artists from the mid to late 90's. Not exactly legends IMHO.
Waylon, Willie, Johnny, George (Jones), Charley, Loretta, Dolly, Tammy...now those are legends. Brooks and Dun had a long ride but again IMHO, are not "legends" and are somewhat responsible for what country has become today.

I've no idea what an 8 track is, but I approve of 5 year old Jack's choices.

Well Jumpin' Junebugz who DO you know? You never know anybody.
This is true. And if it wasn't for Dlisted I'd know even FEWER.
I like a lot of new country. I would never put it in the same league as old country but at the same time, it always pisses me off to see older people dump on the young talent because they "aren't country." Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, they are what's country today. I'm sure some of you have heard that "Storm Warning" song by Hunter Hayes too. People say he's not country but he's performed with Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams, Jr., and a lot of other classic country stars. He plays all 30 instruments on his debut album and can actually sing. Just because it's not "classic country" doesn't mean it's not country and doesn't mean it's not good.
/ end rant
Stupid DP, sorry. Lag!

The older I get, the more I miss the 70's.
I don't know why, I know it had its share of
crappy shit going on. But it's just my favorite decade. Before the internet, and the TV shows were half-way decent.
I think Loretta Lynn is a goddess and can do no wrong...that is all...

Well Jumpin' Junebugz who DO you know? You never know anybody.
I can never get used to the way Zooey sings. It drives me nuts. She sounds like Kermit the Frog mixed with Shakira. She sounds like she has a lump in her throat. I cannot picture this at all and I do not like it.
guest - I think he came out a couple of years ago with that one hit wonder. I like some country music but those lyrics made me want to hurt someone.
Hell, I watched Pure Country last night and was reminiscing about the old George, before he went all Blue Clear Sky on us.
I don't remember 8-tracks.
*shameface*
Now cassettes and vinyl bring back fond memories.
I remember having the Living on a Prayer album as a kid.
It's like when I saw Sister Act in London: even though you haven't seen the show you know the story so well you're bored stiff. Anyway it sounds like a show meant for tourists visiting NYC doesn't it? From Tennessee. "Let's go see Loretta!"
Spotty...is he new? That was pretty bad. Lol.
Dirty Deeds! Man, I can remember driving with my mom in the war (station) wagon to weekend swim meets with Big Balls a-blarin'. At the crack of dawn. Good times.
