Pauline Francis (as perfectly played by Pamela Dunlap), Henry's Betty-hating not the one mom on Mad Men - Every ho is talking about Don Draper's symbolic after-flu sex moment with Carrie Fairchild from Central Park West on last night's episode, but for me the highlight was Mama Francis!
Mama Francis already deserves Hot Slut accolades for reading Betty like no other last season and last night she got closer to becoming my favorite ho by showing off the two items every white suburban abuelita from the 1960s needs in her babysitting kit: a butcher knife and sleeping pills. Mama Francis, who sort of looks like if Mark Addy played Mrs. Doubtfire, soothed Sally's fears about the nurse-murdering serial killer by pulling out her security weapon of choice, a knife. Then when Sally's annoying ass started whining about not being able to sleep, Mama Francis sedated that girl by giving her half of a sleeping pill. That's is how it's done. That's like the rich version of a switch and whiskey on the tongue.
And why does Betty Draper's house look like the waiting area at the Old Time Spaghetti Factory? I bet her dining room has an iron bed frame as a dinner booth.

The talk in the show of the Speck murders is really neat. I'm a Chicagoan and the murders were committed here. I happened to be visiting a friend on the south side recently and we drove past a very imposing church. She said to me, "that's the church where they had the funerals for all of the nurses that were killed by Speck." Very interesting piece of trivia.

Twat Muffin - I don't get the whole Megan thing either. My theory is that she appealed to his "Dick Whitman" side that seems to gravitate towards more free, Bohemian type girls (like the artist girl who was on heroin and Sally's teacher) by being the anti-Betty in California.
Louise -- wow, you've got a good memory. I remember nearly nothing about Jane, and I don't recall her being so forward with Don. I'm just surprised Don didn't go for it because he's such a slut. Megan is nothing to look at, I don't know why he's so captivated by her, especially with that fucked-up grill of hers.
Louise B - you're right about Jane. Very conniving character. Megan's smoother. I've been watching season 4 and I have to say that so far, this season is lacking that special something it had going for 4 seasons. I think JJ's pregnancy plus the stress of battling media heads just sapped Matt Weiner. I keep telling myself that it fits the late 60s times - the anxiety and scattershot writing but I don't know....
I think I'm only watching for certain characters now, mainly Sally and Peggy.
Did anyone else notice how that baby Gene was running around while a large knife was out?

OMG I totally agree about Megan! She is just as manipulative, but is more subtle then Jane. Jane wasn't on the show long before she married Roger. Joan fired her because she took Harry, Ken and someone else into Mr. Cooper's office to look at his Rothko. Jane went crying about it to Roger and he told her not to worry about Joan.
She was always trying to flash the pie goods and her jugs at Don and he wasn't having it. Hmmm....what else do I remember about Jane? She got really drunk at Roger's Kentucky Derby party and got a little handsy with Don. She tried to buy Roger's daughter's affection with jewelry.
I don't know why they suddenly seem to completely loathe each other either. In the first episode, she asked him what he was doing and he replied, "Shut up." So yeah, the hate is strong.
Louise -- but remember how Jane had Roger's book published? When did it go from that to the utter nastiness between them now? Yeah, I guess she was kind of a slut. She's a pretty forgettable character, though, I don't remember much about her. If you ask me, Megan is Jane 2.0. I just need to see some Don & Roger nakedness real soon.

Pete is a weasel. His pants were "floods" last night. Looked like a tool. I just want to know, when is his affair/pregnancy with Peggy going to come back and haunt his marriage?! He needs to be taken down a peg (pun).

Ha, I loved that scene too. Next stop for Sally: Woodstock and mushrooms! I knew it. She totally sounds like her mother, but will soon deal with her insanities with LSD and doobies, all due to the divine intervention of pill-pushing Step-Grandma Pauline. This is too good.
I have no idea why they chose that house for the Francis family, other than the million jokes it has already engendered. The Spaghetti Factory is the best yet, though. I miss the Spaghetti Factory.
ETA: I hope Joan's d-bag husband does die in Vietnam, but before she divorces him. That way she'll get money from the Army and his parents for the kid. Who cares if he's really Roger's kid?
I only watch scenes on "Mad Men" when 'Peggy' and 'Sally' are on cause they are my two favorite characters. Other than that I find it boring but I LOVE the scenery. Sometimes I'll press pause on my TiVo to just stare at a painting or drapery. I'm a sucker for the 50's through the 70's styles.

Oh - and after they killed off Tony Soprano and they killed off Big Love Bill in their finales, I'm expecting Mad Men's going to give Don lung cancer. But I'm hoping he'll straighten up and become a good father to those kids. The whole reason he married Megan was because she was nice to them.
If the show was going on for more seasons, I'd want bad boy Don back, but since it's not I want to see Sally escape from her bitchy mother and the creepy house at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. Maybe Betty could burn the place down along with herself like the crazy wife in Jane Eyre.
Some of you are as whiny as Betty with "everybody on the show's an asshole." Peggy's not an asshole. Sally's not an asshole. Grandma Seconal's definitely not an asshole. Joan's only rarely an asshole (and then only if you count her cheating on her husband but he had it coming.}
If nothing else, the episode was worth watching for Don's nude scene. That man has the perfect body in my book. Love a guy who's solidly built, fit but not ripped, and I'm crazy for that hairy chest. I'd kill to have been on the set when they filmed that scene.
Mama Francis & Sally's scenes were good, but I thought the Peggy & Roger scene was the best. Props to Joanie for kicking her good for nothing husband to the curb.
I hope they don't spend the rest of the season doing a "did he or didn't he" with Don & that ho he strangled.

The "Don hallucinating murder" scene was another really stupid thing I could have done without. WE GET IT, you are struggling NOT to cheat.
I have often thought Sally was the best on this show, and now her scenes with Mama Francis prove this. The two of them are genius!

I watched the first season of Mad Men, it seems like decades ago, and then this one. Boy, I do not get why people love this show. The only thing so far that has stood out is Joan and the English boss in the premiere.
Dr. Rapey doesn't have to die in Vietnam now since Joanie is getting rid of his ass the old fashioned way. Divorce.
Will be much better a few seasons down the road when he lays eyes on his toddler son and the little tyke has (gasp) prematurely gray hair!!

Mama Francis is so damn scary-looking, but when she popped that Seconal out, she became cool for a second. Yeah, Don is getting a bit boring, and I can't fucking stand Megan and her fucked-up teeth. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I kind of can't wait for him to cheat on her, I dislike her that much. Roger is always hysterical & hot. I guess I'm not surprised that Joan threw Dr. Rapey out, and no one will be surprised when he gets killed in Vietnam.
Mama Francis "can't" take diet pills but she can pop (and dispense) Seconal like candy.
My favorite line of hers was when she told Henry about Betty "you could have gotten what you wanted from her without marriage".
Megan has got to go, Don is so boring with her (minus the sex/murder dreams of course).
It sucks only because Megan hasn't jumped off the balcony yet. She's so annoying. The better episodes are usually in the second half of the season. I loved Peggy with Roger last night. It was like a whole new Peggy.
