Open Grammys Post: Hosted By The Promqueeninator
If you're watching this mess on E! right now, then we're rolling our eyeballs in unison at Ryan Gaycrest playing the littlest therapist in the world by taking people by the hand and asking them in a quiet concerned voice about their memories of Whitney Houston. Lawd, I want to run to him, get on my knees and slap him in the face. We don't give three or zero shits about what Parasite Hilton's moment with Whitney was like. I'd rather have a conversation with a wet fart than watch Ryan ask that gutter skank Wonky about Whitney again.
Thankfully, my eyes stopped rolling and went to the back of my head after I this Russian American pop star named Sasha Gradiva (who sort of looks like an Xtina made of melted Play-Doh) sashayed by looking like the secret love child of T2 and Pink Prom Barbie as seen through the eyes of Quentin Tarantino. All these bitches are trying to out-CaCa each other (see: Little Red Riding Attention Whore), but Sasha did it on a budget with a clearance prom dress from Windsor Fashions, a can of chrome spray paint and toy guns from The Dollar Tree. I don't know who Sasha Gradiva is and I won't know she is tomorrow either, but all the foolery on her body is working for me. But I'm probably only saying that because I don't really see a gun strapped to her arm, I see the ultimate no-no poker.
Anyway, this is your Grammy Open Post if you're into it and I'll cover all the fuckery tomorrow, because I'll be too busy downing a doodybubbletini (vodka, Nesquik syrup and caramel lube ) while watching this mess.

Seriously? I mean, hasn't the whole popular music industry (aka most of the shit that the grammys recognize) been more or less dumbed down into something superficial? Like when you see the untalented and autotuned (Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, that Minaj person, etc) getting recognition and taking the stage in lieu of real musicians who don't actually suck, and why? Superficial reasons.

Rihanna and Coldplay. Like you barf in the toilet and take a dump on top.
Thanks. I think I must've chosen well if they let CB get on stage twice. I cant imagine Jhud doing that song justice though. A local producer put it best this morning. He said WH claimed what was previously a country song for the masses, for r&b, pop, no one could hear it and not be affected. Because of her. There will never be another voice like hers. So glad I saw Sir Paul sum up the remains of the day. Once there was a way, indeed.

I have such a headache now. I remember when artists wrote their own songs. Everything now is so over produced and prepackaged. And Dolly Parton wrote that Whitney Huston song. How come she did not sing it? Whitney never gave Dolly any credit for it. Sad.

"White artists hijacking black style and getting credit for it is nothing new. "
ROLLS EYES...
oh please, Adele doesnt have to hijack shit. SO fucking sick of this GD whining and EVERYTHING is about playing the race card.. PROFESSIONAL VICTIMS.... save it.. Fact is, every so often we get a British white girl like Adele or Dusty Springfield who can SAANG with some soul & both artists would be quick to tell you their influences are R n B.. MUSIC IS MUSIC it doesnt HAVE a color..
************************
Your anger is very counterproductive to your premise. No one is denying that Adele has singing chops and that some really good R&B singers come out of Britain. African Americans appreciate their voices too. Even embrace more fully some that whites seem to shun (i.e. Josh Stone, Teena Marie). However, the truth is that on this side of the pond, black female R&B singers of great talent are being virtually ignored by the recording industry. It is not "victimization" or "playing the race card" to notice this and to point it out.
Music may be music and not have a color, but music is also a behemoth profit-seeking business, and it is for this reason that the large recording companies find it far more profitable to invest in white R&B singers than black ones. It's just simple mathematics to acknowledge that white RB artists (who can more easily segue into pop and country markets) attract a much wider listening and buying audience.

Adele is not even an American. That song of hers is painful to listen too. Gaga should have won. No one else comes close to her.
I know this might be hard to believe but I don't consider Alicia Keys to be a soul singer. Her music sounds like it was created by a computer program and fed through a machine. Ok singer and good pianists but her music leaves much to be desired for me personally.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Problem is it is NOT HAPPENING, hellooo?

I previously stated that Rihanna sings pop just like Katy Perry but they still categorize her as r&b. The question is who determines which category an artist falls in? Because it just seems like they are just shoving them in the category that matches their skin tone.

After Esperanze Spaulding won for Best New Artist instead of Justin Bieber last year, they cut out 31 categories, mostly ethnic, like Latin Jazz, lots of Folk and other categories where a win meant a HUGE amount in terms of exposure for the artist. There has been much protest and uproar in the business since then.
http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/genre/latin/grammy-awards-protest-planned...
"Latin jazz musicians protested with signs and loud music outside the Grammy Awards on Sunday as they continued their nearly yearlong fight to reinstate 31 categories which were eliminated by the Recording Academy in 2011. "

So you have to be black to be soulful? Ok. That's what I'm getting from some of these comments.
======
It's amazing that people understand what is written the way they WANT to understand it. No one said any of that. I love soul music, period. I don't care what color the singer is. Some of my favorite artists of all time are Teena Marie, Dusty Springfield and Michael McDonald. But, Adele is not a soul singer, neither is Christina Aguilera, or for that matter Beyonce. But they get credit as being "soul" singers, pushing out the real soul singers who don't get any recognition for their talent. And guess what, most of them happen to be black. Why? Because the masses (both whites and blacks, sadly) prefer to see a white face performing "soul" music. I can't think of a black female soul singer that has gotten the attention Adele or Amy Winehouse have gotten in the last 5 years at least. And it is not because they are soooo much more talented than black soul singers either.

One last thing on Adele's rasp. I think it was there due to the polyp she had removed. I used to have a pretty clear voice and now due to age and smokes I have a rasp if I sing too much.
@somelikeithot
I didn't say black artists should only do R&B. Black artists don't just do R&B. I didn't state that or intend to imply that. My comment isn't about artists being pigeonholed but artists that are being forced to sing songs and styles they don't want to because they're being told R&B won't sell.

I don't have a problem with white artists doing soul or r&b. My only issue is the push for black artists to go away from soul/r&b. I think when Lady Gaga came out all artists in general felt the push to move towards that sound including black artists who only did r&b. I remember Erykah Badu mentioning on her Twitter that black artists walked away from their bread and butter and now white artists are filling the void.
Sincerely,
Alana Smithee
Look at it the other way. Why should black artists only sing r&b? Why can't they expand into other genres if they want to? I've got a problem with the music industry that no matter the genre that a black artist sings they get lump into the r&b/soul category. The last music award show they had before the grammys (cant remember which one) had Rihanna nominated (and winning) best r&b/ soul album for Loud. I mean wtf. Which part of Loud is r&b or soul? It's straight up pop. Rihanna sings the same genre of music as Katy Perry and no one is putting Perry in the r&b category.
That being said, if a white person wants to sing r&b, I don't see the problem. Music genres don't belong to one race. But I find people like pigeon hole musicians in one box, instead of allowing them free reign to do what they want.
As long as Lady CaCa didn't win, I'm happy.
No real surprises tonight, except Chris Brown acceptance back in the music world (still pissed off about the Grammy).
And the McCarthy jam session is going too long. I'm turning to Van Helsing on TBS. LOVE Hugh Jackman (see, I'm not a racist *LOL*) and love campy, CGI movies.
Good night everyone!!!
