I am a visual artist. I love Tony Bennett and have followed his art career. His landscapes are surprisingly good. This drawing is 75% good. To be able to draw actually "fell out of favor" especially in the 1950's. They stopped teaching drawing in art school so that artists could be "modern". Artists like Jackson Pollock made accurate rendering "passe'". I know many artists who finished 4 year art school and they can not draw a lick. However, there is a real resurgence of realism now and many artists currently practice drawing (especially the figure). Hands and feet are always a challenge because they require painstaking observation and practice. I find it comical when I see drawings where the hands are placed under a blanket or something. Being able to draw hands and feet is what separates the men from the boys (and that is not meant to be a joke about gaga).

The Natural Way to Draw, by Kimon Nicolaides is a great book for beginners. You don't need "talent" to do the exercises and they really help.

Bennett is a professional who sells his work in his own gallery, so critical evaluation is part of the territory. But I don't want to discourage any amateur out there who wants to learn how to draw. It's not as difficult as people think, it just takes a lot of practice and the willingness to challenge oneself.

Migraineuse, I tip my hat to you. I cant draw for shit. But i do know that for people who know how to really draw and studied art this will look like crap. But I don't have a critical eye for it! I did a Colin Farrell drawing a while ago and it was truly heinous!
I wish I still had it so I could post it here and everyone could have a good laugh or get freaked out by how bad he ended up looking!

Had nothing to do last night so I checked it out on Amazon, along with a few similar books.

I think books like this appeal to women because they promise to give women the upper hand in their relationships with men. This promise is always false, because in a system where women have far less economic and social capital than men do, women can never really have the upper hand. But the more entangled in the system they are, the greater their need to believe that there's something they can do to empower themselves. Something they can buy for not much money that will make them feel better. Books like this fill that void. They don't work, but that just leaves the market open for the next book.

Owly, when I look at that noseless wonder I can only think that the arm is so small and withered it looks like she's had polio.

Bennett's line is okay, but his proportions are off and he's too heavy on the shading.

My artistic spidey-sense tells me he's had maybe a year or two of drawing classes. If he's done more than that he didn't get much out of them.

But I make art for a living, so I've got a critical eye.

Like I said I love Bennett, by all accounts he's a lovely person, but I just can't with this drawing.

That's not an awful drawing, but he really screwed up with the left side of Gaga's face. That, and her claw nails, make her look like an alien from the black lagoon. That is, more than she usually does.

I hate relationship self-help books. They're so focused on trickery and playing games and acting disinterested. Wouldn't it be so much better if everyone were just...I don't know...honest with each other? /end rant
