Hot Slut Of The Day!
As I do every Saturday morning, naturally, I put in my Brenda Russell's Greatest Hits CD and sat in front of the player with the booklet, singing along like my inner emotions were walking next to hers. Okay, I didn't do that, but I did bring it up in my iTunes and that sparked the question in my head that should've sparked in my head years ago: Has the velvety songbird that is one of the official voices of every doctor's waiting room ever been Hot Slut? The answer caused me to bust a CITIZEN'S ARREST on myself and I'll willfully turn myself into the police precinct today.
In the meantime, sway like your mother in the car to the music of Brenda Russell, singer, songwriter, Broadway composer and the merlot-voiced artist who reminds me of simpler times when I still listened to the radio and wasn't totally embarrassed to sing songs used in commercials. I mean, you know "Get Here" was probably the theme song for Greyhound, Amtrak, inpatient johns, drug mules, every airline, etc... etc....
And "Piano in the Dark" was always my favorite song to put on when ConEd turned off my electricity (it happens to all of us, don't lie) and all I had was time, candlelight provided by Glade and draining laptop power that forced me to be choosy about my mood music. Thank you, Brenda!

She may have wrote it - but Get Here is Oleta's song.

Get Here was not just composed by Brenda Russell, but it was also the title song of her 1988 album of the same name. Oletta Adam's cover came fours years later in 1991. While Adam's cover was the more commercially successful, it is not her song. In my opinion, Russell's more subtle, less produced version is the better of the two.
One of my favorite songs. I've loved it since I was a kid.
What a simply exquisite song.
"Piano in the Dark" is one of the best songs that I've ever heard in my life.
Brenda Russell = great SOTD
They would never play this song on the radio in 2011.
One of my faves and one of the best songs ever.
Heh. I remember the escandolo in the '80s when that ho Cheryl Ladd stole poor Brenda's husband away from her. I always though Brenda would put the big beat down on that "angel," but apparently she was too much of a lady (unlike me, who would have cut the bitch).
My favorite Russell song is the one for which she wrote English lyrics in 5 minutes - Sting's "She Walks This Earth" from the Ivan Lins tribute CD:

Sooooo many memories with Piano in the Dark. Maybe i'm still a lil stoned, but feel like i'm the back seat of my parents car, heading home from getting underwear at JCPenny's, and having Hot Dog on a Stick. And it's raining.

I love your code words, it sounds really hot! But what does it mean?
I can't believe Get Here is that old. I would have guessed '94 at the earliest.

And you, and you, and you you're gonna love me
I've heard this song.. somehow I wouldn't have known Brenda's name, though. *slaps self*
This song always reminds me of Summer 1987 and fruit-flavored Certs and cruising in Atlanta. Happy slutty memories...mmmmmm
I forgot all about her and her beautiful songs, but both of these tunes used to make me all vaklemp and misty-eyed every time. Great choice!
