Navy SEAL, U.S. Petty Officer 1st Class Jon T. Tumilson died while serving his country on August 6th when Taliban insurgents took down his helicopter in Afghanistan and his funeral was held earlier this week in Rockford, Iowa. Jon's dog Hawkeye came to the funeral, walked up to the casket and paid his final respects by lying down in front of it before letting out a sigh. Jon's cousin Lisa, who took the picture, says that Hawkeye stayed on the floor for a while and refused to leave. There's a video of Hawkeye's sad goodbye, but it plays on an annoying loop and makes him look like he's doing the wiggle.
If you need to uphold your reputation as a Styrofoam-hearted block of zero emotion then just tell everybody that your eyes look like that because you beat up an onion earlier for looking at you wrong. Or because you've been injecting liquid bath salts into your eye balls again. One of those.

My condolences to you and to your friend. To me the men and women serving in the military are heroes and have my utmost respect. I know this thread is pretty much dead, but my last words on this are, you can disagree with war, you can dislike Afghanistan, oil, wealth, world domination and baseball. I don't care. We all have things in our government we dislike, but while I do disagree with people politically, I also respect their views, and you do not. Please note that their are people here who are military spouses or in the military themselves. Your words are hurtful and unkind.
You may dislike what this picture portrays to YOU, but to the majority here, this picture is nothing more than an example of a dog grieving the loss of it's master. I put no political spin on it nor does it make me think of politics. It makes me think of a man who died and who happened to be in the military, who had a dog who loved him. If this had been a banker, an actor, a teacher, a secretary, an ironworker, a grocery checker, I still would have felt the same thing I did. A dog mourning it's master.

Ok Professor VP whatever you are free to have your opinions but as an Army widow and a single parent I just want you to know that it is easy for people like you to say all the things you want to say without having had to pay the price of loosing a loved one...regardless of the fact they volunteered go do the job so many do not do thanks to the freedom this country provides...pheeew feel a lil better and sorry for being too political. This is a beautiful story and I personally know somebody who lost a friend in that crash.

If your husband didn't pay attention in school or learn a substantive trade, and wound up in the military in a bad economy, I can understand that, and it is possible that you do understand that it is just for the money and benefits he does what he does. And that is better than saying he is protecting anybody's safety or liberty.

my husband hangs out of a Blackhawk helicopter as a door gunner, ferrying troops to and from bases. Do you think he wants to be there? Do you think he wants to have a giant red bullseye painted on himself everytime he goes to work?
He does it because he has to support our family, he does it because he has a degree from devry and couldn't find a job as a civilian, he does it because its better than collecting welfare, he does it because in just 5 years he will be able to retire and maybe if this country's leadership doesnt fuck everything up too bad he will get a nice little pension.
I have been through 6 year long deployments since these wars have started I have basically raised 3 kids on my own, I live with the fear of getting a knock on my door by men in green suits that will tell me my husband is dead. I don't have luxuries or peace of mind most of the time, I have to be strong for my husband, for my children, for my sister army wives, they are all looking at me to be the pillar of strength for them

If you've been following this site, I'm sure you've noticed that MK has a soft spot for animals. This is more about Hawkeye than anything, the love of a dog for his companion.
I absolutely know about the bullshit you're talking about. It's why they don't show dead bodies on television anymore. But I doubt this little story is more than a blurb in the newspaper or the Internet. If someone wants to distract us from the truth, they'll blow up a building or something. Or start another war. It's a gossip blog, hon. I'm with you on the politics, but I doubt you're gonna convert anyone's opinion in a thread about a dog.
There are quite a few intelligent people who frequent this site to do exactly that - forget - and enjoy fluffy smartassery before they have to go back to the real world. The real world sucks, I know, and taking a break from it isn't a bad thing. Doesn't mean we all don't know or don't care.

This story warms my soul. And while I don't agree with our government's policies and the huge amount of money that goes to the defense contractors, etc. and the lies we're all being fed, bless the soldiers for doing what they do. They're just working people, like you and me, caught up in the bullshit like the rest of us.

However, while I get what you're saying, writing "If the soldier didn't know he was fighting to build a pipeline for Unocal, it was his own fault for getting involved" shows an incredible lack of sympathy for a human being who died. It also shows ignorance. I mean, how do you know he didn't know why he was there? And his reasons for signing up? Maybe he didn't agree with the war either but had a family to support or saw the military as an opportunity to go to college. What the fuck do I know about this guy and his reasons? And what the fuck do you know about it? Saw this the other day and cried for hours... UGLY cried.
As a seasoned hospice nurse, I've seen lots of people die. The saddest deaths are the ones when the animals can sense their owner is dying. They gravitate towards them and stay right at their side as they take their last breaths. Some would say it's their "sixth sense" but I have a hard time believing that's all that it is.
I can't seem to come up with a word stronger than hero for our men and women who serve in the military. They are so much more than that...
