The gorgeous, sensitive and sensible Charlize Theron (NO sarcasm this time, don't pass out), the girl I would totally go ghey for, the object of my adoration and my avatar has said before that she would never get married until gays can. Me: CHARLIZE I AM SO ON BOARD, WAIT FOR ME BABY!!! Anyway, in September 2009, she said "I do have a problem with the fact that our government has not stepped up enough to make [marriage equality] federal...I really understand marriage and I respect marriage. I just feel that we should all have equal rights."
I have to say that in my experience, I think marriage is a huge stinking steaming pile of bullshit (jaded much?) but like Charlize, I totally support other people to make the biggest mistake of their lives no matter what their sexual orientation is. No, really, marriage CAN be a beautiful thing. I've seen it work and we all want to grow old with someone who loves us enough to smear Ben Gay where our bathing suit covers.
In a recent interview on CNN, which you can watch here on Towleroad, she reiterates her stance, adding that marriage is not important for her (SUHWOOOON AGAIN) but that she understands its importance to other people. She ends the interview by saying "We should all have equal rights. Love is such a divine thing, it's a gift, and who are we to say?"
It's a sensitive subject, but I'm with Charlize (I fucking wish). I mean, if two adults love each other enough to make that leap, and only fuck on each other till they die, and put up with each other's morning breaf and shitty moods for the rest of their lives, I think they should be able to. Marry me Charlize!! *licks monitor*

I don't think it's true that celebrities protesting their own marriages does nothing to help gay marriage. While it doesn't directly affect the law, celebrities (unfortunately) have a lot of influence on fans and people in the general public. People can be easily swayed by celebrities who support or care about something (SEE: Brangeloonies). And you never know maybe she has close friends who are gay and this is her way to support them. At the very least she might be opening a few eyes. Regardless, it's one of the least annoying things I have seen/heard today.

By the way, as for the "oh it's just a piece of paper" thing about marriage, then why NOT get married? Seriously, it's just a contract, and this coming from a person usually afraid of commitment! In most countries, if you live with a person for a long time it can give them the right to seek alimony and even half of your assets, anyway. THAT'S when things get messy. I think it's better to state in the papers what belongs to whom, and in case things don't work out, then everything will be already settled (although I'm aware that laws are different in every country).
If I really love someone and think we should live and maybe spend the rest of our lives together, you can be sure as hell I'll get married (thank fuck it's already legal here). I know it's a really personal issue, but I don't like the idea of being, say, 50 years old living with the same woman for like 20 years and introducing her as my "girlfriend". Living together and spending that much time of your life with a sole partner is a huge commitment. I'd like to call her my wife, not my girlfriend!

No not jaded, reasonable I would say. But for those who want it, etc. as you said, have at it and good luck.
What I don't understand is how Charlize (or Brangelina, or anyone else) NOT getting married helps to get gay folks the right to get married.
Seems to me that this kind of "protest", however public, is unlikely to help the cause - unlikely to have any effect, actually, on whether gay people get the right to marry throughout the U.S.
I saw in union square last fall and she is just as beautiful in person. swear to god, she walked by me and I thought to myself, wow, so that's what real-life airbrushing looks like. she looked so gorgeous it was like she was permanently airbrushed. that kind of sounds weird but you know what I'm trying to say. she was also surprisingly tall.

If they really want to make a difference, they'd be doing something other than flapping their gums about how they aren't going to get married when they probably weren't going to get married in the first damn place. I mean, she was with Stuart Townsend for like 9 years and they never got married. This is not the marrying type of girl. The "I'm not marrying until gay people can get married" thing is a load of shit. Not to say that I don't like her, because I do, but it just bugs me when people use that as an excuse when it does nothing and generally means nothing even to them.

What you said. Marriage can turn out right -- my great aunt and great-uncle had five kids, never split up, and were together until he died a couple years ago. I want marriage, and screw anyone who has a problem with that.
And these celebs who claim they'll only get married when all gays in all states (in all countries?) can get married are just going "me me me! LOOK AT ME!" It doesn't further anything, because nobody is gonna mob the Capitol insisting that gay marriage MUST be legalized so Brangelina (a hetero couple) can marry.

People need to stop equating marriage with legal acknowledgment and validation of love. That is not what it is. Everyone is free to love anything and anyone, stop saying the government is saying who "we can love or what is good love". Nowhere in civil marriage is love mentioned. It is church marriage, where the term marriage originated, that talks about love throughout a ceremony. And the exchange of vows--when marriage actually happens--makes no mention of love (for Catholics at least). So stop with the LOVE!

WTF? I don't even know where to begin with. Sorry, but most of us gays and lesbians - and straight people, for that matter - marry due to love. It's not the middle fucking ages anymore, and as long as you don't live in a theocratic country, that's the main reason why people decide to get married. Most backwards governments don't agree with legalizing gay marriage because they believe this kind of LOVE is sinful, unnatural and jeopardizes their sexist, heteronormative concept of what LOVE and a family is. Legalizing it is, in their view, akin to condoning it.
And although in Catholic marriages love is mentioned in a ceremony, it is, obviously, no guarantee that love exists between the two parts.

As for gay marriage, I wish we could just get over this whole shit and let everyone get married already. And true, marriage isn't necessarily about romantic love after a while, but it is one big-ass social and economic commitment that can get awfully messy if you try to untie the damn knot. Many a time I've told my husband I QUIT THIS BITCH!! but then my mind starts imagining the lawyers, paperwork and money needed to be a free (and poorer) woman again, and I say "Meh, let's work it out!"

People are too preoccupied with what other people think. The only thing people think about the majority of the time is themselves. Who cares about boyfriend/ girlfriend husband/ wife introduction? it should be about commitment and not so everyone can know you are married, no one will be thinking about it in 2 seconds b/c they are back to thinking about themselves. One of my favorite sayings is " what other people think of me is none of my business" my boyfriend calls me his lady when he introduces me and I call him my man.

I understand marriage is not for everyone. Really, I do. I think everyone should have the right to be married, but not everyone HAS to get married. On that same note, it really irritates the shit out of me when people dog on engaged or married couples (yes, I'm biased).
My sister has been with her boyfriend for 7 years and I've been with my fiance for 3 and she is ALWAYS blabbing on and on about how "we don't need a ring to symbolize our love, womp womp womp." I don't yell at her telling her to get hitched, why is she on my case? If you don't want to get married that's fine, but if people want to get married then that should be fine too. I think what really grinds my gears is that she is probably doing it out of jealousy because she had always wanted to get married before her boyfriend convinced her otherwise.
