Not mentioning the word 'marriage' is not what is going to calm fundies down. Remember Hawaii? They were all up in arms because of same sex civil unions. What fundies truly want is for gay couples not to have the same rights/social recognition as straight couples so can justify treating them like they're inferior. Even if you do successfully abolish marriage for everybody (which, ha, good luck with that. How would one even start to justify that) then you'd just have FOTF groups rallying against civil unions for same-sex couples - as you already do in those places where same sex marriage isn't even on the table.

This might be just me not being an American but I gotta say that in all legal systems I've come in contact with, marriage is NOT a religious institution, marriage is a civil institution that is performed by government authorities and can be celebrated in one of two forms: religiously (provided that the State recognises clergymen of a particular religion legitimacy to celebrate marriages) or civilly. Marriage is not always religious but it's ALWAYS civil - marriages presided by competent clergymen will be automatically equiparated to civil-celebrated marriages without the couple having to have a second, civil ceremony.

It's simple, really: if the state issues marriage licences and controls which marriages are valid and which aren't, marriage is a State-run institution and as such is bound to the principles of the State.

ED: again, not sure this applies but since it does pretty much everywhere else I've looked into, I'll be very, very surprised if the US turns out to be different.

My idea of marriage is a long, twisted tale...not sure if I should go there but, here goes.

A. Marriage NEVER required 'love' and women were often treated as 'chattel', so in essence, marriage for many women was 'slavery' only in the friendly form of, "I have to birth your babies and slave over YOUR home for a roof over my mouth and food in my belly". Special, that one.

B. Taking a 'man's' name? Talk about being stripped of your identity (not that it matters since your mother had to take her father's name ad infinitum, ad fuckery to boot). Even Jews respect that being a Jew is passed from the MOTHER and NOT the father because of all of the raping and pillaging and incomprehensible horror stories that happened to them.

C. Marriage might as well be called "subjugation" and does anyone really want any of that anyhow? Centaur has a point...why are we 'enlightened' people fighting for 'dark ages' shittery? HUH?
